Putty
Is there a standard, or generally accepted distance to zero a limited gun in at for IPSC? Is there a standard requisit whereby your site picture is above at certain distances?? Iam shooting a 6" STI/SV .
mcoliver
I zero mine at 25m and confirm impact from 3 to 50m. At 25, my bullets impact just at the top of the FS. I notied it doesn't vary too much out to 50 but could be a tad bit low on the close stuff. YMMV.

waktasz
I have a similar question, assuming my sights are set at 25 yards or so, should I be aiming slightly high, or slightly low for a very tight shot at around 7 yards. I shot an IDPA match this weekend and I do great hitting paper, but afterwards we got a dueling tree out with little steel squares and I had a hell of a time hitting it. I think it has a bit to do with where my sights are set up to hit and how I line them up. Any advice the pros would like to offer me ?
Matthew_Mink
In the grand scheme of things, the bullets flight path once it leaves the barrel to around 20 or 30 yards isn't that big of a difference, for most calibers. It may shoot a little low the closer you get, because the sights sit up higher than the barrel. The farther the target is out, the flatter it shoots, until the bullet starts dropping off, and that can be found out by shooting at different distances, as mcoliver stated. FWIW, I have zeroed nearly every handgun I have at 40 yards whether its Limited, Open, Production, 22's, etc... I just remember it shoots a little low at 50 yards, but not much. And on extreme close stuff, it may shoot a little low, but in between its pretty much point of aim, or close enough.
Flexmoney
I pulled out my Sierra reloading manual...opened it up to the balistic tables...found the 40cal, 180g bullet doing 950fps (171pf)...and was going to type in a bunch of data here. But, frankly...looking at the data...it doesn't make much difference where you sight in. I'd suggest 20y, 30y, or 40y. Then, shoot some groups at various yardages and see where it hits for you. twix
My master buddy taught me to zero my gun for me, freestyle standing, at 20yards. It's a good starting point anyway, obviously it'd be nice to know where your loads hit at different distances, for you. TomB
Zerwas
All USPSA matches I have gone to haven't had any target over 20-25 yards so what is the point to shooting beyond those distances? Granted I am not as "experienced" a uspsa shooter as I'd like, but that'll change. Do they have longer range targets at the nationals? I zeroed my SV out to 25 yards, and it is DEAD accurate with any range in from 25 yards. I have yet to try it beyond 25, but again, it goes back to my original point.
