Dirty Steve
Does any one have any experience with these? It was well checkered and very few tool marks. It fit on my Les Bear slide very nicely. Had to use a little force and put some JB bore paste on it and slid it back and forth for a while and it now glides under it's own wieght with no wiggle room. Kimberkid
Steve, A good buddy of mine has a Rock River Met. Sight gun in .38 Super. It is one the the sweetest shooting 1911's I have ever seen. He paid a pretty penny for it, but it shoots as well as most open guns.
Dirty Steve
I should have said what I was planning to do with it. I had a Les Baer 40 caliber complete upper half that I had built so I could convert my Premier II from 45 to 40 and back again. Now I decided two dedicated pistols would be much better. (Ok, I knew two guns would be better just tried saving some cash.) I also want to build a spare open gun using RRA slide and frame. I found the frame at a gun show for $300 with cherkering on the front strap. Seemed like a well made piece just wanting to see how everyone elses experiencees were with these guns or Slide/Frame combinations were. Dirty Steve, Out. DougCarden
I hate to compare anything. Having said that RRA guys used to work with Les Baer and formed their own company. I would say that the frames/slides are equal in quality, having had both. They are great in my uses. DougC
Kimberkid
Steve, They all suck, I'll give ya $50 for the whole lot just so you dont feel like a jackass for keeping them in your safe. If you ever wanna adopt, PM me for my contact info, and keep in mind that I can reload for ya. That sounds like a smokin cool selection, and if my limited experience with the 2 companies is the rule, you should love your Rock/Baer..... or Les/River. SRT Driver
Steve, Rock River builds a GOOD pistol. Mine shoots 1.5" @ 50 with my loads and my eyes .. Prone. It shoots just over an inch from a Ransom rest. It just takes a while to get one. Seems like many top smiths like RR's frames and slides..Chuck wrote the CNC program from my understanding. They require less work to feel like butter. I guess he cannot make enough frames/slides to meet demand. Doug K used his frame and slide, until he went to S&W, so do several other top 'smiths. Bullseye shooters love RR pistols. He did work at LB for a while and I think SA too, but could be wrong. Didn't discuss that with him. RR's AR's are excellent too. John Holliger, a top highpower shooter and smith, uses his uppers, lowers and triggers. The DEA likes them too. And NO...I am not paid by Rock River..just like their work! Dirty Steve
Kimber Kid, I'll keep you in mind in case my son does something to tick me off. I need someone to pass on my Les Baer PII, Les River, Kimber and my in production 6" Open gun being built by Alex Hamilton too. SRT Driver, Thanks for the info. I'm aware of John H. and his great work. Looks like I have my answer. No one has posted anything like, "I bought a frame with the holes drilled out of place causing my gunsmith to have fits." or anything like that. I will use them to build my next open gun which shall be a back up. The frame looked great with only a few minor tool marks. The way the frame fit the LB slide leads me to believe that the same vendor made both parts. Kinda like Wilson frames and slides being made by Kimber to thier specs. Since the Rock River parts can be had for less money with the same quality, it would seem the sensible way to go. Dirty Steve, Out.
SRT Driver
Steve, I'd say the frames and slides are done right! My RR is the easiest 1911 I've owned to detail strip. Everything fits like butter..except the extractor. You may be right about the vendor although "LB makes his own frames" Remember? Chuck did switch to a new vendor for the rough forgings using his CNC program. LB uses a different CNC program but I'd bet they are similar.
