jriggs
anyone know who makes a good 14.5" barrel for a rifle length gas system that wont break the bank? doesn't need to be a high end barrel...just decent. thanks, riggs
ccoker
I don't know of any You might look at the Adam's arms 16.5 rifle length
jriggs
need the 14.5 for a total length after pinning a comp
Shooter115
Considering that a rifle length gas system on a 14.5" barrel would put the gas port so close to the end of the barrel, I don't think there would be enough dwell time to build up enough gas pressure to make it run. Unless you were going to run it suppressed all the time, then it would probably fly. Guessing that's why nobody makes one. If you must have rifle length, I'll go along with ccoker and suggest the VTI/ Adams 16.
a.roberts
http://www.ar15barrels.com/prod/operation.shtml At the bottom of the page linked above, there's some info about gas system length, pressures, dwell time etc. Rifle gas port is at 13.2", you'd have 1.3" inches of barrel past the port. A 10.5 carbine has 2.7", more than double, and sometimes they don't run right. I'd go with a midlength system.
BBJones
you are asking for something that won't run. 14.5 middies are soft shooting; go with that.
ccoker
yeah, I think my 14.5 middy is softer than my 16 FWIW, I am running the Ballistic Advantage barrel and am impressed.. made consistent 400 yard hits with XM193 https://ballisticadvantagellc.com/?product=5-56-14-5-hanson-midlength-
jriggs
all good info...thanks for the heads up. doing a little more research now. was planning on running it suppressed but didn't realize it would most likely run like garbage without the can. again...thanks guys. ccoker
FYI, the BA barrel I am using runs with and without can with a Vltor A5 setup without the can and running 223 vs 556 I need to go to a lighter buffer than the standard 5oz to get the bolt to lock back To me that means they got the gas port right and not oversized Edited April 11, 2014 by ccoker
jriggs
so who's the best buy for a 14.5 midlength gas barrel then? any suggestions?
shooterready
all good info...thanks for the heads up. doing a little more research now. was planning on running it suppressed but didn't realize it would most likely run like garbage without the can. again...thanks guys. If you are going to run suppressed you should stick with a 16" barrel to avoid NFA stamp. Unless you plan to pin and weld suppressor to the 14.5? I have a DPMS dissipator barrel, 16" with rifle length gas. This rifle runs 100%. 14.5" with rifle gas, like others have said, most likely won't run well. jordonhurd
Go 14.5 mid length and shoot the hell out of it.
CJW
I have a pinned 14.5" on a Rainier UltraMatch mid-length. It runs very well; I've only shot it out to 300yds so far but it was very shootable at that distance.
troupe
You will most likely need a adjustable block when you go suppressed, or goes with the Adams kit for the piston conversion. My 12.5 was so dirty with the can on it, I switched over to the piston and it is awesome.
gunther
Try salient arms they make a 14.5 barrel w/ rifle length gas setup.
BBJones
Try salient arms they make a 14.5 barrel w/ rifle length gas setup. How much does that cost? Your first born or will they accept your second born if you throw in your soul?
gunther
BBjones, just got done chatting with salient arms. They said they are so far behind on orders they won't sell barrels, just complete rifles.
gunther
Considering they sell there custom glocks for $2600 it might be cheaper to have a custom barrel made from a blank!
Hippocampus
Go 14.5 mid length and shoot the hell out of it. +1... I've used a 16, 18, and 14.5... by far, 14.5 has been my favorite!
ambluemax
I have a 14.5 Noveske and a good friend has a jp15 that's 14.5. They are my favorite size, recoil depends upon the whole system and how it harmonizes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Charbonneau482
IIRC Salient makes their ARs with a 14.5 barrel and rifle length gas system
thegunnerd
I just finished a rifle with the 16.5 Voodoo / Adams barrel with the rifle length gas system . It's shooting really well. Still dialing it in, but so far it's reliable with my ultra light recoil system, full mass bcg, and adjustable gas block Edited April 23, 2014 by thegunnerd
