EricW
Any clues? Anybody made one out of D-2 or S-7? (It it even possible to thread S-7 in its un-heat-treated form)
benny hill
My comp on my ar has lasted 12,000 or better w/o much wear. Made of a good grade of s.s.
EricW
Benny, Was your comp heat-treated after machining? Thanks!
George
I’ve got a smith machined comp from circa 1990 on my old trusty AR. It is made of hardened steel (don’t know grade) and blued. 20+k and 15 plus years see no gas erosion, some finish corrosion and that’s about it. Got almost 10k on my CTR-02 tank brake and if you clean it right down to the stainless, it’s pretty pristine, even around the first baffle hole. -- Regards,
EricW
Crap. What am I doing wrong to piss off the Gods? I have maybe 500 rounds through mine and don't think the front baffle hole will last more than 1500 to 2000 rounds. It's already eroded 1/4 of the way through. Waaaaaaaaaahhh!!!! Paule
Eric, what is your comp made of? Sounds like it may be one of the free-machining steels with a lot of sulphur in it. We use them for prototyping as the stock is cheaper and machining time is much shorter, but the first baffle will shoot out pretty fast.
EricW
Paule I don't know for sure and really don't feel like asking anymore. I am beginning to think it's just a piece of cold roll. I'm probably going to replace it with a flash hider anyway, but what a disappointment.
