Ramag
I tried 4.5 grains of E3 with 185 Nosler and 3.5 grains with 230 Bayou bullets last Sunday. The shot well and did not have obvious pressure signs, but the recoil surprised me. The recoil was much more than I expected and definitely was not as soft as Clays at the same charge. The 185 load had a little more snap to it than 6.0 grains of AA2 with the same bullet shot the same day. Each load was weighed. How consistent is E3 lot to lot? Based on comments I read here, I thought it would have a milder recoil. It was not a really heavy recoil, just more I was expecting.
Steve RA
How did they chrono in comparison to your previous loads ???
ZackJones
I can only compare e3 with Trail Boss but my first impression of e3 is that it's "snappy" compared to Trail Boss. Of course the e3 loads I was testing actually made major power factor and the Trail Boss loads didn't. I'm sure after I've shot a few hundred rounds of e3 loads I'll get used to it. Steve RA
One being major and one not may have some influence on the "feel".
bowenbuilt
You need to shoot those over a chrono for sure. If you had an obvious amount of recoil more than Clays then my bet would be the velocity was higher. At the same power factor I find it hard to tell the difference in the 2 but e3 gives higher velocities in some loads and is sometimes surprising how fast it pushes a bullet for the amount of powder used. I have found that e3 is spot on lot to lot. Edited February 12, 2014 by bowenbuilt
MarkCO
Yep, if it felt like more recoil to you than Clays, then the power factor was very likely higher.
RH45
If I remember right, with a 185 jhp, I needed to go almost a full grain over max, with Clays to make major, but, that was chronoing at this time of year, and when I shot the State IDPA match in August, when it was 90 degrees, I made 190pf. That was the last time I used Clays. VV310 for .45 now.
