Looked at a Beretta today

Everybody loves to hate the Beretta 92FS. Let me see if I can recall all the reasons.

1. Too big

2. Too heavy

3. Double action trigger sucks

4. Single action trigger sucks

5. You gotta have sasquatch hands

6. It screwed Sig out of the M9 competitions back in the 1980's

7. It's not a 1911

8. It's not a Glock

9. It shoots that little 9mm round, ergo you must pee sitting down

10. Safety/decocker is in the wrong spot, it should be on thr frame, not the slide

11. After just 5 rounds, the back half the slide breaks free from the front half, flies off the gun, and hits you in the mouth

12. Open top slide allows too much dirt and grime

13. Checkmate mags suck

14. Trigger bar is partially exposed

15. Frame is made out of aluminum, should be made out of steel

16. The DA/SA transition takes some getting used to

17. It eats locking blocks

18. The DoD contract was given to Beretta so we could put Ground Launch Cruise Missiles (nuclear tipped) in Italy

19. Everybody knows what the Beretta is because of Lethal Weapon and Die Hard

20. If you have to tap, rack, bang a malfunction, you can inadvertently flip the safety to ON!

That about covers it.

I love mine. :)

Not as accurate as a 1911, trigger can't be improved much (like a 1911 can). I like my 92, it's probably the only auto I would bet my life on since it has not jammed in more decades than I could count. For competition? Not a good choice.

I lent my 92 to my sister about 5 years ago because she wanted a 9 to shoot and it's the one I knew would never jam or give problems. Slide is also very easy to cycle.

No wonder Ben changed guns! :-)

There have been some others besided Ben:

1. Ernest Langdon

2. Dave Olhasso

3. Gordon Carrel (I think???)

4. Ryan Brammer (rvb)

5. Steve Andersen

But as far as I know, Ben is the only person to have won a National Championship with one.

Here he is shooting a sub 4 second El Prez with one:

and here is his IDPA classifier video:

Ben was using an Elite model of the Beretta 92. It has some cosmetic/ handling type improvements over a regular 92FS, but probably the most important one is that it is a decocker only. That little "safety" lever on the slide is like spring loaded, so when you press it, it will drop the hammer safely, but when you let go, it springs back up. With a 92FS, the safety lever will stay down and you can squeeze and squeeze and SQUEEZE! the trigger but it will never go BANG! It's just one of those things to watch for when clearing a malfunction.

The triggers on the 92FS models are very heavy. You can get a "D" spring for the main spring. Or you can take a 1911 mainspring and cut a few coils off.

The brigadier/elite slides do let you press out the black steel front sight and insert some other front sight like a fiber optic from Dawson Precision (that should be gripe #22 above).

Other than that I just added a bunch of skateboard tape to the front and back straps of mine.

If only Beretta had made or imported more of these in .40 cal :

92-Stock.gif

And up'ed the magazine capacity to say like 18 plus rounds of .40, maybe it would be a more viable and cheaper option than an. STI/SVI for the Limited division.

For the OP, USPSA rules dictate that the stages be set up so the shooter is not forced to shoot more than 8 rounds from any one position or array. So bumping the mag capacity up to past 16 will get you through two full arrays before your gun goes empty.

The standard capacity on a 92 is 15 rounds of 9mm and 11 rounds of .40. Getting 18 rounds of .40 in would require a huge increase into the size of the grip and frame. That would not really align with the purpose of the 92 which is a basic duty weapon.

Para Ord made a 1640 which is a double action 1911 with 16 rounds capacity, it was the LDA 1640. I have one. Not my favorite gun for a list of reasons, but would get the job done for shooting two strings of eight.

Whoops! i forgot one:

21. If you are ever in a fight with Jet Li, he will strip the slide and barrel off before you can even blink

LOL on this one!!! :roflol::roflol::roflol:

I have a 92fs somewhere in my safe and I have a complete rig to use for matches but I can't get myself to bring it out when I have my CZ SP01 Shadow that's so nice to shoot. ;)

I got hooked on the Beretta Inox versions in the mid 1990's when one was on the cover of Guns and Ammo or Handguns magazine.

Then like three months later they had a stainless CZ75b on the cover.
