Therealkoop
Is it reasonable to fire loaded ammo in the cold, that has been kept in a warm enviroment (pocket, truck, house, ect) to simulate its muzzle velocity on a warm day? Been using WSF in 9mm. Ill be traveling south for a match soon and I have had zero opportuinity to shoot in warm weather considering my location and the fact that I just started reloading a few months ago. I dont want to end up having cycling issues. Thanks
yoshidaex
Do a search but I'm under the assumption WSF is a inverse temp sensitive powder. I don't think you'll have cycling issues but you may have power factor issues. What sort of temperature spread are you expecting? Therealkoop
About 0*f to maybe 55*. Yes WSF is apparantly inverse temp sensitive. Ive been running a pretty light load of 3.7-3.7g with a 147g projectile. I was considering going to 4.0g just to be sure.
yoshidaex
Wow. That's a big spread. Winchester load book shows 4.3 nets you about 935 fps with a 147 jhp. How about warming up the rounds by keeping them in the engine bay of your car?
DonovanM
I dunno man, my match load last year seemed to make 138PF wherever it was chronoed. Here in ~55 degree weather, in Illinois for A5 in June or Utah for A1 in May. It was much hotter in IL and UT.
Therealkoop
I put a box of ammo out in the cold last night (about 15*f). I also kept a loaded mag in the house (65*f). I shot both over the chrono after taking one step out back and couldnt tell a percievable difference.
yoshidaex
What was the velocity for each?
Therealkoop
Im not home at the moment, but I believe they were both right around 860. One was real low at 820 but that wasnt due to temperature. Shot 10 of each, the cold ones first, and the averages were real close.
yoshidaex
What sort of match will you be shooting in the south?
Therealkoop
Only 3 gun stuff, so no worries about meeting power factor.
