Skeet!

Fellow forum member Tom Freeman took me skeet shooting today, not only did he provide great instruction, but also ammo. Always fun to try a new shooting sport, even more fun when you have so much help. BTW I shot somewhere around 13 or 14 I believe after some practice.

I shot two rounds on thursday. My first time as well. Found out its alot harder than it looks. I think I could have done better with the open blaster.

13 or 14 is pretty good.

On my second round I cleaned stations 6,7, and 8. But I hate 3,4,5 so its all the same.

Nice going. I love the game of skeet.

While I'm not skilled enough to give advice, I like shotgun sports so much I always try to sneak some in.

When you go to a club you pay per round(25 shots). Dump a box in your shell bag and step into station 3. Start shooting high house singles, and rest your arms every 10 shots or less. If things seem better after 20 shots, shoot 5 shells at high 4. You will improve faster this way than you would shooting complete rounds. Then, you can repeat on station 4. Latter on, each problem station can be worked on like those.

I have come to believe that once you get station 3 and 4 worked out it pays big dividends for 2,5,and 6. A good instructor is priceless. If you don't use one, read enough about skeet so you understand "hold points" and "pick-up points (eye focus)."

My first round of skeet many years ago was shot with my 870 hunting gun with a long barrel and a full choke because I didn't know what I was doing. I actually did pretty good that day breaking in the high teens. Jump ahead years later and I got to where I was breaking 23-25's with a .410. Shooting skeet with a .410 is quite and experience and makes using a 12 ga. seem like overkill. :)

I love skeet almost more than eating and I weigh 250. I shot 6 rounds today with the last 2 being doubles at 1-7 23-26 & 24-26 with a 20 gauge. I love the .410 but it is so humbling trying to get the same breaks with a 1/2 oz of shot after a 12 gauge's 1 1/8 oz. The wind here on the Rocky Mountain Front is an even bigger challenge when a calm day is 20 MPH.

Chris was kind enough to let me shoot a fast round of doubles after we were done. Hip shot several, just because. Batting 500 there.

Chris and his 1100 Competition Master got some stares from some of the grumpy old men that dont like us kids, but *that* is a thread for the hate forum.

Its always nice to have a good student that is willing to learn and remember that having fun is the goal.

As soon as Chris got the idea of really leading and following through, he started breaking them hard.

Neal, as soon as I go 100 straight low gun, I will have to order a 410 tube set from Briley. Low gun with a 410, doesnt seem like it can get much harder.

I got Lizard and JJ shooting skeet like mad men, maybe Chris is next.

Stuart, what are you doing this Thursday at 3:00? Gonna join Chris and I out at the base?

ahhh way cool...maybe we can form a skeet afternoon competition..

think I am going to have to pass till after the first of the year..

work is beating me up with people on assignment and burning vacations..

Thursday..I got a capital expenditure meeting and a Iraq meeting...we are prepping up to go again with the regiment and the 571st air ambulance..so its going to get busy again..

so maybe in the lull between the new year and march..I can get some shotgun time with you guys..that would be a good time..

rtr,

My dad started shooting skeet while I was in the service. When I got my discharge and went home, he started me shooting skeet with him. Most Sunday mornings I would get up and go shoot a couple of rounds with him.

He brought me a Browning Superposed so I could play with him. Later, after he retired from shooting, he gave me his Beretta and my brother his set of 101s.

He has passed on now, but I stll have very fond memories of those days of shooting with him. Skeet is a great sport. Not to start a flame war--but I enjoyed Skeet much more than Trap. Probably because I always shot skeet with my dad.

BTW: my first time i was great on the doubles and totally stunk on the singles. station 4 was always a chanllenge. 13 is a pretty good score to begin. 20 is decent after a few months. hope you go 25 straight!
