My new open pistol

Recommended Posts

Well we don't have a 3 gun specific pistol forum so I figured I'd post these in the accessories section.

This is my new Matt McLearn Custom MCG open gun I had built on a tactical frame for the night time 3 gun matches. I'm sure I'll have to shoot some USPSA open minor just for kicks too.

Great looking pistol, Jesse! Are you concerned the flash from the comp may interfere with night vision or will this be solved by running minor loads?

With a Streamlight Pro Tac HL and 540 lumens on my head and a 630 lumen TLR-2 HL on the gun it's not really a night match at that point. It's just dark in the corners.

Same for the rifle and shotgun. I run a pair of TLR-1HL on the shotgun and a TLR-2 HL and a TLR-1 HP on the rifle. If the barrels don't burn you the lights will. These new high output HL light are second to none for weapon lights especially when you compared the bang for the buck and you can get holsters for them.

Please let us know a few things as an experience competition shooter:

1) How well does the Trijicon hold up as a slide-ride?

2) How fast is the dot as a slide-ride vs a frame-mount? Do you lose it more often in recoil?

3) Do you lose the dot in muzzle flash?

I keep going back and forth between a slide-ride on my M&P Open Build (same holster as my Limited rig) and cheaper, vs a frame mount, which is heavy for the M&P since it has to wrap under the gun to thew tac rail.

1) I have a few thousand rounds on a dial illuminated model on my old Glock 17 open gun. This new gun only has a few hundred rounds on it. The RMR I used here was actually sent to me by a Trijicon engineer. He said he did some work to the unit to make it tougher forthis exact application. Time will tell. The tactical word is in live with the RMR as a slide ride option for a defensive pistol. I'm sure there is more longevity info out there from those guys.

2) I chose the slide ride option over a dot on a mount for a few reasons. In 3 gun we aren't hosing paper as fast as the guys in USPSA. The average pistol shots are small steel targets spaced a good bit apart. For 3 gun I never have to wait for the dot. Based on my limited use and the fact that the for never leaves the screen with this comp I don't think it would slow me down any in a pistol match either. The benefit of a slide ride is that this gun fits in my traditional BladeTech DOH holsters once I heated up the end and opened the kydex for the comp to protrude thru. Lastly Jerry Miculek has been shredding it with his M&P Core with a slide ride dot. So if it's good enough for Jerry it's good enough for me.

3). I don't notice any muzzle flash during the day or at night matches. During the night matches I have a super bright Streamlight TLR-2 HL on the gun and a Streamlight Pro Tac HL Headlamp on my head so I don't see the muzzle flash either. I'm going to swap this RMR out for the adjustable version so I can adjust the dot for day/night use.

Hope that helps.

Jesse

On the dual illuminated RM05 model on my Glock I had to get the headlamp just right to light up the tritium fiber optic deal on top of the optic whole trying not to wash out the dot.

With this one I won't need to shine the light on the sight so I don't think it will be an issue.

Nice blaster Jesse. I've started piddling with open 3 gun a little bit, and this pistol takes care of the biggest issue with open pistols- which is the holster. I can't afford a new pistol, so I'm using an older model safari land, which encloses the comp in some suede leather so it's a little more secure. It's not ideal, but hopefully it will be ok. There is nothing like taking off hauling ass and hearing the RO yell "STOP". You stop and look back, and there is your STI laying on the ground. Just not a good feeling.

Hope yours works out good for ya. If it runs as good as it looks, you've got a winner.

I know what you mean. This video is from our little indoor Sunday night match. It's a pistol and/or .22 rifle match. I forgot to tighten my holster or just degun after running my pistol. On my rifle run with my pistol holster completely loose it actually beat me to the next shooting position.
