kdj Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 After seeing Short Round's compensated, optically sighted Ruger 22 in action at the local Monday Night league, I've decided I just have to build the ultimate tool for this competition The courses of fire involve 6 round strings, ranging from 25 yards to 7 yards, PPC style targets to reduced scale IPSC targets, with time intervals ranging from a shot every 10 seconds to 12 shots and a reload in 20 seconds. And there are a couple of strings that require reloads. What do you think would be the perfect weapon for this game? I'm tending towards someting like a Hammerli 280 with a 2X red dot but am open to even more radical (but implementable) or even more reasonable suggestions. My Open gun seems to be working so I need some project to be thinking about Thanks, Kevin
Chris Rhines Posted December 8, 2004 Posted December 8, 2004 Six-round strings put the kibosh on most of the really nice Euro-bullseye guns, unless you want to play around with custom-built magazines. Also, forward-mounted magazines are really going to screw with your reloads. Too bad, 'cause a Pardini SP with a low-mount Doctersight and compensator would be just the ticket. I'd use a Smith and Wesson Model 41 with a compensated Falcon Machining barrel (no topstrap), extended mag release, orthopedic grips by Null or Randall Fung, and some trigger work. Drop on a low-mounted Doctersight and you'd be good to go. - Chris
Kingman Posted December 8, 2004 Posted December 8, 2004 I shoot a GSP from walther and love it, I have about a 14oz trigger on it. The 5 round mags would not help though. I use a std propoint on it and it works for me. I do understand that they do make 6 round mags but have never seen one. Call champions choice The Hammerli 208 is very nice, but pricey comes with 10 rd mags. Can only find them used for about 1800 or so in good shape. My dad has a 2* on his 208 and I can't stand shooting the thing with that on. It just freaks me out the way it looks like I am shaking.
Guest Larry Cazes Posted December 8, 2004 Posted December 8, 2004 A Ruger Mark II 6" bull barreled Target model with an aimpoint tube would be just the ticket. The weight of the barrel eliminates any need for a compensator with CCI Stingers, almost zero muzzle rise as it is. Mine shoots sub 1" groups at 25 yards from a rest all day long with the CCIs.
kdj Posted December 8, 2004 Author Posted December 8, 2004 Hmm ... some interesting ideas. I used to shoot "Olympic" events back in college, and the Hammerli level of pistol just seems more satisfying than the Rugers I've shot a Pardini and they are nice but 5 rounds ... So long as a 4 second reload is possible, it should still be manageable so the forward mounted mags are not a deal killer, although I have to admit, I've never tried to reload one on the clock! I'm thinking that a 2X Aimpoint would be about ideal. I've looked at the Doctors for Open guns and they didn't meet my aesthetics I can't seem to find anyone still selling 280s and haven't had much luck finding stockists of 208s either. I'll have to explore the GSP if there are 6 round mags. Anybody know of good sources, and if it's possible to mount a scope on such pistols? EAA have a nice scope mounted target 22 - but the 5 shot mags are a deal killer there! One day I'll learn that there's a reason that no one makes the kind of gun I'm always looking for ... I think I was born well out of the mainstream Keep the suggestions coming! Thanks, Kevin
