Advice for first USPSA match in a while

Tomorrow I'm shooting an USPSA match for the first time in a couple of years. Since I last shot L10 and production came along. I have chosen production as my game. Could you offer any tips or suggestions? Like how many mags should I carry? Reload location stategy? I will focus on safety and the 180.

Thanks in advance,

Keith

Five mags, four on belt. Reloads will usually be after four targets or eight rounds, which usually means when you leave a postion or array. Sometimes you will want to push it and use ten rounds, or even eleven, but be careful if partials (hardcover or no-shoot) or steel is involved. Go for an A hit on every shot in Production (due to Minor scoring). Rare Cs are acceptable; Ds are not.

When trying to break a stage down for reloads, if you're having trouble, consider breaking it down form the finish. As in --- I have to end up here to shoot A,B,C because they're not visible from anywhere else, but hey, I could also pick up D and E while I'm here. Sometimes it makes sense to reload after a small number of rounds ---i.e. the first position has two paper, then you take a few steps and the next position has two paper and two steel, or positions two and three have 5 paper between them but the change from one to the other is a half step. In both those situations, I'd probably shoot four and reload......

If you can carry five mags on your belt --- do. Better too much ammo, then not enough....

Remember to have fun!

Thanks Erik and Nik,

I wore 5 mags on the belt, 1 in the gun and 1 in my left rear pocket with 9 rounds. Nik not to worry, I had a blast at the Oakdale Sportsmans Club annual turkey shoot/end of year awards dinner. This event is a great example of a club "giving back to the shooters".

Nik your advice of breaking the reloads down from the end of the stage came in very handy today on a stage called "Can You Shoot". It featured a long diagonal shooting area with 16 targets and 3 US poppers hidden among various walls and barrels. I set up my plan end to start and it worked pretty good:)

Thanks again guys,

Keith

Keith,

glad you're back out there. I don't know how many stages I broke down badly --- before I started looking at them backwards too. You just never know what you're going to find. I got a tip from Phil Strader last year too. He suggested not just looking at the obvious, in your face targets at ports, but also just seeing what else you can see --- because if you can make a few long shots, it may save you steps or an awkward reload, or a whole position somewhere.....
