I tried to write an article on the amazing shooters at the 2014 He-Man National Championships for "Shooting Wire" but I must have done something wrong.

So: Congratulations to the He-Man National 3-Gun Champions!

May 10-11, 2014, the He-Man National 3-Gun Championship was held at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico. Shooters competed in 7 natural terrain stages all over the 33,000 acres of the Whittington Center. Stages all had time outs of 300 seconds or longer.

The He-Man Iron Champion is once again, Kuan Watson who has won the title for all 3 years of the championship. Kuan has spent the year, since last year’s JP RM3G, shooting…well, NOT He-Man. In his first match back behind the big guns, he wins again, against 2nd place Michael Payne and 3rd place JJ Johnson.

The He-Man Scope Champion is the first two year’s wee-man champion, Jared Millinazzo in his first match appearance shooting He-Man gear! He squeaked out a win against 2nd place, Michael Atha and 3rd place Don Bednorz.

In wee-man, with Jared gone, it was up for grabs. RO Craig Calkins beat the field to win the mini trophy and wee-man tiara. He beat top wee-man junior, Orin Atha, by less than 5% and 3rd place John Reid. (wee-man is a division for staff and friends of He-Men that don’t shoot the big guns.)

For the first time, the championship had a lady He-Man, Diana Driscoll who did an amazing job.

The division of He-Man was born back in 2003 at the first Rocky Mountain 3-Gun. Eddie Rhodes, a Pueblo police officer, is considered the first He-Man. All the shirts sport two of his favorite phrases, “9mm makes you weak” and what he used to say to shooters when he was RO’ing instead of stand-by…”Prepare for Glory.” Eddie passed in 2010.

He-Man Nationals is one of the lucky matches that gets to include the Eddie Rhodes memorial trophy which is like the Stanley Cup, but better. Top He-Men Law shooters are engraved on the base of the trophy. This year’s winners, are the same as the past two years: top shooters Kuan Watson and Tate Moots.

All He-Men must use a .308 (scoped or iron), a .45 pistol and a 12 gauge pump shotgun.

Congratulations to all our top finishers. Go to: http://home.earthlink.net/~johnson3gun/id12.html for more information and results.
