jkrispies
Just got a Boyds Evolution SS stock for my steel .22lr rifle. Really like it, and it's long overdue, except I could use A LOT more length of pull. I swapped the Limbsaver off my Savage bolt-action to test the feel and it's helping a lot... will leave it on there if I have to since my bolt-action doesn't get much use, but I can already hear the razzing I'll get for installing a Limbsaver on a 10/22!!! The Savage pattern is close enough for government work, but I'm wondering if anybody knows of a perfect pattern fit to the Boyds so I can either buy a new pad or better yet some spacers? I'd like another 1/2- 1 inch. (Yeah, I know: "That's what she said." Beat you to it!!!) That would be on top of the stock pad. Thanks, J (PS: Before anybody suggests that I try rimfirecentral.com, I did-- what a PIA site!!!) Edited July 14, 2013 by jkrispies
dlfleetw
Hard rubber plastic cutting board can work you would need to pattern the stock on the board then sand and polish it. I believe you can get stock making inserts from brownells but the cutting board would give you 1/4" per insert you made. I have seen people use Aluminium billet if your handy or have access to a mill.
jkrispies
Thanks for the info! I found a relatively cheap shapable 1/2" spacer on eBay. I was hoping to avoid the shaping part since my handiwork never quite comes out as professionally as I'd prefer, but maybe I'll get lucky and the spacer will be close enough. (Yeah, right!) Of course, polished aluminum spacers would look extremely cool, accenting with my barrel, bolt, and soon-to-be-had silver trigger... Must... fight... desire... to spend more money!!! dlfleetw
Plastic takes polish just like metal will. Go up through grits (220-1000) of wet/dry then break out a car polish wheel or bench grinder and polish to a high polish finish. Another cheaper and easier option would be hardwood spacers coat in cynocrylate (super glue) it's a poor man's high polish resin. Good luck and post pics of the finished product. jkrispies
Will do with the pics sometime next month after I get the new trigger, which should pretty much bring that project to a close. Think I may actually start a "post a pic of steel rifle" in the Steel Challenge section right about that time.

jkrispies
Got it on and looks better than passable! Thanks to everybody for the advice. Please post a link to the ebay auction, my ebay search fu is weak today. Thanks Kick-eez spacer: http://www.ebay.com/itm/181144359608?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 Bear in mind that I had to fit it myself because it is very oversized. My advice is to place the original butpad on the spacer and shade around it with a pencil. Then carefully grind it down until the pencil marks are gone. Very easy if you have access to an oscillating spindle sander such as this: http://www.sears.com/craftsman-1-4-hp-120-volt-2.6-amp-portable/p-00921500000P
Ming the Merciless
DOH! Thanks, I found those but they didn't look as thick as they did on your rifle.
jkrispies
I got the 1/2" thick version, which is the thickest. Two other sizes... probably 1/4" and 1/8" inch.
