1911 Recoil Spring

I have a 5" Kimber Custom TLE / RL II that I use for 3gun, IDPA, USPSA, etc. The other day I noticed my recoil spring is starting to get a slight bend / kink in it. Very suttle, but I've heard that can happen over time, and can cause problems? It's the original spring from Kimber. The gun has (I'm guessing) somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 rounds in it. The gun is 4 or 5 years old. I'm shooting 230 grain round nose berry's plated bullets loaded with 5.6 grains of Winchester 231.

Do I need to replace the recoil spring? If so, what's the best spring to replace it with if I'm willing to pay top dollar?

If it doesn't say "Wolff" or "Sprinco" on the package, I won't use it. I've used Wilson in the past with no problems too, but prefer the Wolff stuff. They've been at this game a while now.

I've got great results with Sprinco recoil springs. 5.6 grns of 231 sounds pretty hot also. What fps are you getting?

+1 on the load sounding hot. With 231 I am at 4.7 grns with the same bullet at 800fps or so.

And Wolf springs take the cake. I am running a 13lb variable power that I change out every 2-3k rounds just to be safe. A $7 investment to help reduce the likelihood of a cracked slide on $1,000+ gun is comforting. May be a bit over kill but oh well.

Buffalo Hunter or Hog Hunter loads are a bit stiff, I'd recommend backing off on that load at least a grain, then get a spread of wolf springs from 15 to 18# and see which one you like best.

I'm sure IMSI springs are good but my milage wasn't good with them, seem like about 2 or 3k they went soft, the Wolf go for about 5k. Open guns are hard on springs.

Limited guns and single stacks run a bit longer on the same spring, but if you compare the cost of the spring to the cost of the 5,000 bullets well darn bargain.

Hey dmd6x!? Did you ever get an answer to the FIRST part of your question?

Do I need to replace the recoil spring?

Though, I suppose all the discussion about WHICH spring you should get does strongly suggest that all those guys felt that "Yes, you do need a new spring if your factory, original one is developing a kink.

Would the need to replace recoil springs become less frequent if you had a shok buff installed?

Also, I heard about these new aluminum buffs, not sure if they are any better than the traditional rubber like shok buffs.

I bought one and have yet to try them out. The only thing I noticed is that they appear to be tight and does not sit flat on the head of the FLGR unlike the shok buffs. I got scared to shoot it that way so havent tried it yet.

I run 5.1 of wsi with my 230 rn Berrys in both my sig and colt and still make major. 5.6 sounds very hot interesting to know what speed they are moving at.

Like the idea on getting a spread of recoil springs for tuning. Might change the mainspring also, 17lb seems to be a standard that will run most primers.

Check out the 1911 store he'll give you a break if you purchase three or more.

Need to shoot your load through a Chronograph seems a little hot. That will cause springs to fail quickly.

1911's like oil, hard to over lube one be sure it's not dry.
