johnhhuber
I just bought my first two M&Ps (5" and 4" pro series 9mm) for IDPA and USPSA competition. I have shot 1911s for years and this is my first real jump into this type of pistol. Questions... 1 - What springs do I need to change out and at what recommended frequency? (my 1911s I changed firing pin spring and recoil spring every 2K rounds etc.) 2 - What parts do I need to keep in my repair kit? I have heard the strikers are prone to break...what else? Thanks! Ken_Bird
Well I am in the same boat with you. I would like to know also.
partyboy424
I ended up just getting one of everything. But the basics: Slide stop Frame roll pins Striker assembly Magazine springs Recoil springs Trigger return springs If you have two guns, then just take them both to every match. The slides and mags are interchangeable, should something break. I replace the Recoil spring when it's feeling worn and that's all I've ever replaced that wasn't caused by me modifying something and breaking it. Every once in a while I'll set off some rounds that are loaded with hard primers like Winchester. If they all go off without a hitch then I know I won't have any problems setting off my Federals. LikesToShoot
I've been shooting M&P's for a few years, at the local level. I have every part available from Brownell's in my range bag. Plus, I carry a spare gun and have never required any replacement during a match. (Knock on wood) The only parts that I keep on my person when shooting a match are: fiber optic rods, matches, striker assembly, and recoil spring assembly. The ONLY thing I've ever replaced during a match were loose fiber optic rods. YMMV. Steve
johnhhuber
Thanks for the info everyone. This is great! LikesToShoot - I have the stock fiberoptic sight on my 5" pro series. Do you know what size fiber rods I need to get for replacements/spares?

L3324temp
I run a 13lb recoil spring in my M&P Pro 9 and change it every 4k. At some point after that the gun will start to come out of battery when I holster.
mcracco
And if you are heading to a major match you might want to pack tools; Brass hammer, roll pin punches, Allen wrench for rear sight, Apex armorers' block (or roll of duct tape), etc.
nick romero
this is great been looking for the same post of what stuff to keep in my box just in case.
Kool Aid
My range bag contains a striker assembly, fiber rod, recoil assembly, spare barrel (KKM in the gun), and a backup gun. I do a lot of dry fire and replace my trigger return spring every 10K rounds. The 13lb recoil spring wasn't reliably keeping the gun in battery after 5K rounds, so I moved to a 15lb spring. Just replaced the extractor spring at 15K as preventative maintenance. I'll probably replace the factory striker spring and AEK sear spring at 20K.
