Benelli m1 won't release shell on to carrier

After welding up my carrier, so my thumb doesn't keep getting pinched, the button to release shells onto the carrier stopped working. It works just fine when shooting but when practicing loading I can't get the shells back out of the tube. I have to manually move the carrier latch out of the way to release a shell on to the carrier so i can cycle the shell out. Anyone else have this problem? I did remove so material from the middle of the carrier latch so shells would go in easier but it worked before I welded up the carrier just fine.
