rooster
With the current primer shortage I was wondering if it is feasible to enlarge the small primer pocket and insert a large primer. Would this work?
Steve RA
Perhaps if you wanted to do one as an experiment.
Merlin Orr
If you have large you could probably trade someone...?
polizei1
I agree...I think it would be FAR easier to just trade them for SPP. Even if it's possible and it works fine, that would be a tremendous amount of work.
rooster
I have primers. I was kinda wondering if it could be done at the commercial level. If the manufacturer running the brass just makes the primer pocket fit a large primer then the reloader could purchase either size.
Steve RA
I think the mfrs would rather go in the other direction and make all the semi-auto cases small primer. Would make it easier from a manufacturing standpoint.
Guy Neill
It doesn't strike me as feasible. The case head of a 9mm Luger is 0.393" or so and the large primer diameter is 0.210" compared to the 0.175". That would leave about 0.090" around the primer. I don't know the extractor groove diameter offhand, but sounds like things are getting really thin. Guy
polizei1
Not to mention that's just a stupid idea IMHO. Look at all the trouble the SPP .45ACP has caused. It's a crap shoot and now guys have to hand sort by primer size. NO THANKS.
TerryO
Last time there was a shortage, 2008-09, we had an Iraq/Afghanistan veteran that was making his own primers shoot with us. He'd take fired primers pull the anvil and push the dent out of the cup. Then he sandwiched a piece of cap gun cap in the cup with the anvil. He found the key to making it work was using the anvil in the cup it came out of. He had some failures, maybe 5-10% but it can be done. I'm sure all the Prepers out there already knew that preparing for TEOTWAWKI. May sound crazy but not as crazy as trying to use LPP in 9mm, naturally that's just my opinion. ;-) Edited February 24, 2013 by TerryO

Sounds pretty thin to me too.

Doc Hunter
The large primer will also increase the risk of a live primer strike by the ejector on 1911 type pistols. Not a good idea all the way around.
