USPSA Official Position on Firearms Law Proposals

This is worth knowing. It's not that USPSA officials don't want to say something, it's that they can't without jeopardizing the organization.

USPSA BOD Official Position

We’ve received a number of concerned calls and emails regarding the current political landscape as it relates to our organization and our close association with the firearm industry -- especially from our clubs in NY. We very much appreciate the passion of our membership and their desire to communicate with us their feelings on these sensitive issues. Many have been wondering why we, as an organization, have not yet made a statement regarding our position on the matter.

Our official response to these inquiries is that USPSA is a 501©(3) non-profit organization and, due to an act of Congress passed in 1954, we are prohibited from taking a partisan stance without risking our non-profit status. The penalty is severe for not complying with this mandate, and there is no middle ground. If you do engage in politics, you lose your exemption.

As individual concerned citizens, we've all taken the time to personally speak to several key members of congress (local, state, and federal) and the NRA to voice our concerns. But, for the good of the organization, we are obligated to keep our personal feelings and official capacity entirely separate.

Obviously, USPSA cannot and does not endorse any action by any member that would violate either federal laws or the laws in their own state. We encourage our membership to study the issues and then write letters and make phone calls to the appropriate elected officials accordingly.
