usmc1974
Are the piston ar's easyer on the bolt then the gas?
fastshooter03
I wouldn't think so. Normal AR the gas is forcing the bolt forward and the carrier rearward at the time of unlocking. Piston is just slapping the carrier rearward to unlock everything so you would think it is harder on the cam and bolt. Nick

gixxerjunky
Piston AR's have more recoil as well. Some believe to how violent the action is.
Steve RA
How does the bolt get pushed forward when it's locked in the locking lugs ??
usmc1974
So it is better to stay with the gas system? For longer bolt life.I never knew bolts broke this much, how many round might it take to break one?
rcollier
Steve RA...The "bolt forward" may have been a misnomer but it does move slightly and takes the presssure off the lugs as the gas comes in behind the gas rings holding the bolt stationary (linear) as the carrier is forced rearward and the bolt rotates free as the cam pin does its' work. fastshooter03
I only have one piston rifle so my experience is limited in that regard. But I do prefer a normal gas system's lower recoil impulse and smaller profile on the barrel Bolt failure is a hard thing to predict. If you do some internet searching you might be able to come up with some numbers. I like to think I have some extra life coming since I use the JP enhanced bolt. I have seen a lot of chipped lugs on 308 ars w normal gas. Nick
