Another press or quick change conversion

Recommended Posts

So I recently started reloading, and needless to say all my free time has either gone to reloading or shooting.

I currently reload 45 acp and plan to add 223 on a Dillon 550b. I am looking at reloading 9mm and was pricing out the quick caliber conversion when I ran across a lee pro 1000 kit in 9mm at a price of 135. It seems this press has had mixed reviews, but from what I think I have read that if you set it up and leave it, that it will perform well. Is there any reason not to go this route, or is sticking with a quick caliber conversion the right route?

Thanks.

I prefer to buy at least pairs of presses so I don't have to change priming systems. However, I would rather change priming systems on a Dillon than load on a Lee progressive.

Wow, that is a good idea. You can load anything, and never have to screw with the priming system.....

well i think i am sold on that idea.

Acquiring another press is always nice but I was on a budget so the route I took was to buy up a few thousand small primer .45acp instead. Now loading 9mm, .223 and .45 acp w/o having to change out the primer system. Cheaper than buying a new press....

I would get the quick change for sure. I don't think changing the primer size on the 550B is that big of a deal either. While I'm changing cartridges I generally use the opportunity to clean the priming system to help ensure things get going smoothly. Once you've got the hood off, so to speak, the part with the cup on it is already out so you just swap it when you put it back together. About the only extra thing you have to do is change the tube out.

I'm not saying I would mind having a second press and never changing it but for me personally there are other things I would probably spend money on first.

I went ahead and ordered the conversion last night from you. So sticking with blue. Perhaps a 650 one day....

Good move - and thanks! It will be shipping tomorrow.
