My 617 went on a diet.

Very nice! Did you do the work yourself? If not, mind sharing who did it, how much it cost, and how much weight it shaved off?

Also, who makes that extended cylinder release?

I did the work myself. I didn't weigh it before but it weighs 2 pounds 4.3 ounces now with the grips on and the center of gravity is the stop notches. The release is a hogue that I reshaped and checkered.

I wish you were closer so I could con you into doing the same for me. I do not a have a fondness for the underlug. I shoot an old K-22 in 6 inch and enjoy the benefits of the longer sight radius but a 6 inch 617 is too muzzle heavy for me.

It should be easily doable is you had someone to spin off the barrel I could mill it and send it back. I have the action wrenches for K/L and N frames but they are curde tools and could probably be made with oak and some mild steel. I am regularly running .017 second splits and I think the reduced cylinder weight helps a lot. I wish I had done it a lot time ago.

You did an excecellent job. I have a 617 that has has a great trigger job and new grips but nothing else done to it. I have about 25 reloaders for it. When I shoot steel challenge I hate waisting time reloading the speedloaders so I have enough to get me through the entire course.

Love shooting the .22 and I find CCI Tactical shoot best.

Yes, the finish OD of the cylinder. I want to machine mine.

I just took stepping passes with a carbide triangle and turned the cutter to complete the taper angle and made a clean finish pass. I will mic the OD when I get home but the cylinder wall is still .090" if that helps. I have 1,500 rounds through it since I finished it and no sign of any problems. One thing is you can now see the blast at the forcing cone which is kinda cool.

1.302" is the OD on the front of the cylinder and for anyone who is curious, I took about 8.3 ounces off of the gun. I could have A LOT more but I was going more for style than pure weight reduction. It really is amazing how much better the balance is now.
