ChrisG164
Putting together a budget if I have GansGuns build me one. Is there really any difference between these two besides 10-20 bucks? Both would be Carbon Steel. http://www.brownells.com/handgun-parts/slide-firing-parts/slides/1911-auto-slides-carbon-steel-nc-sight-cut-9mm-sku168-000-050-23286-49500.aspx http://www.dawsonprecision.com/ProductDetail.jsp?LISTID=80000835-1194037995 Edited October 19, 2012 by ChrisG164

ChrisG164
They are both cheaper at shootersconnection.com. Good point. But I can't find a 9mm for a caspian slide. I want either bald or a rear dovetail ONLY for a slide racker.
ChrisG164
Also, does this kit come with a frame and slide http://www.dawsonprecision.com/ProductDetail.jsp?LISTID=80000BD2-1268766197 ??? If so, then I'll probably just go with IT.
DRobson
It doesn't seem like many open guns are built on a long dust cover frame. Just something to consider with the kit you posted.
Aircooled6racer
Hello: Can I suggest something to you? OK I will then :roflol:Why not wait till after nationals and see who is selling there open pistols? You may find some great deals a month after the match. If you are deciding on a slide for a project why not ask he person who is going to build the pistol fo you? They may prefer one slide over the other for the build. Both are great quality. Thanks, Eric

They may prefer one slide over the other for the build. I completely missed this very good point. I thought the builder had you shopping for parts. Get a hold of Gans and ask him what he wants from you. He may have everything and may have gotten the parts cheaper. He may prefer one brand of slide over another as well as all the internal doo dadds that go along with the project. When I chose Matt Cheely to build mine. We talked at length about the process. Since I was an Open newb he basically told me what was best for me. He had all the parts. But I wanted him to hand me my gun upon completion at the Ohio Match so I bought the frame from shooter's connection and mailed it to him. Since I bought the frame I already had to go through the same drill as buying a gun. After that it was just a part. or something like that. Just get a hold of Gans and tell him you want a 5" 9MAJOR, or a 5" 38 Super/SC, or a shorty, or whatever. I'm sure he will have some options but for the most part he will build what he always builds. If he is anywhere near as good as Matt about communicating he will give you a few updates as it's being built and maybe even snap a pic or two along the way. STEP ONE get in touch with your builder of choice.
dskinsler83
+10 to all that was said above....the builder will most likely get the parts at dealer cost instead of retail and should not have you shopping for the stuff yourself. But I love Sarges tip on buying a frame then you send to builder and they can return it to you just ask if they prefer to cut for ramp barrels them selves though
ChrisG164
Well if you go to gansguns.com you'll find the Open pistol list of parts. For something to do I decided to compile a list of those parts and part numbers and prices. No commitment at all. My plans honestly are to buy a used pistol and send it to a smith like Gary, have him tear it down and replace any parts that are worn much as well as install accessories that I know I want and which the pistol I buy may not have. When is nationals???

If it ain't broke don't fix it. Also, shoot it for a while then make changes after you've had a bit of time with it.

blaster113
Gans built my Open gun which runs and runs and runs. I bought the parts that he suggested with the exception of a Brazos comp, mailed it too him, and less than 3 weeks later got a well built reliable and accurate gun. My advice is try as many configurations as possible before your gun is built. And don't make it too light. I ended up making my gun too light and had to add a little weight to it. Now it rocks. (No 28 round big sticks as Hawaii is a 10rnd state...) One of our local Master Open shooters shot my gun and commented that it shoots and tracks about the same as his high dollar gun from another well known builder. Big compliment as he is very picky with his Open guns. With hard chrome I saved about $500 on the whole project compared to guns from other well known builders. And I had a 2-3 week turnaround. With careful selection of parts Gans can build you a gun which will run with the best of them. But the trick is getting the right combo of parts and figuring out how light to make it. blaster113
And I used an STI slide to save a little bit of $$$.

I just don't feel like waiting to shoot, but I may end up having to either way. JPL's takes 4 months only and he specializes in 9mm's

FWIW Mildot This quote is from the ATF.Gov site pertaining to people who mail pistols .. I still think it's a fat chance that they'll ever know what's in the box, but still.. is the hundred bucks worth the chance of prison.. hmm.. "Whoever knowingly deposits for mailing or delivery, or knowingly causes to be delivered by mail according to the direction thereon, or at any place to which it is directed to be delivered by the person to whom it is addressed, any pistol, revolver, or firearm declared nonmailable by this section, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both." donnyglock
Chris Gary recomends STI slides. Or at least thats what he told me for my three builds. Heres how it works. You buy all the parts you want to use. You will have the frame shipped to an ffl for transfer. Then have your ffl send all the parts to Gary insured priority mail. That will save you some cash. Gary has built three open guns for me and the work is always top notch. Mine range from no holes in the barrel to a hybrid 4 port barrel. Theres really nothing gary cant or wont build. One more thing not all caspian slides are machined for the reverse plug so if you do order a caspian make sure it is or the gunsmith will have to do the machining at a higher cost.
