Floppy 8 shot moon clips

Gathering supplies in anticipation for my 8 shot revolver coming back soon.

My moon clips for my 8 shot are sort of floppy and loose , i'm used to the 625 moon clips which keep everything stiff and rigid and work well for reloads, just wanted to see if this was the " norm " for the 8 shot variety.

they measure in at .024" thick, ordered from mooncliptool.com

any recommendations for thicker / sturdier clips?

Hearth will make your clips consistent with brass you use to give an optimum fit. Just let him know what you are using. He is excellent to deal with.

I agree with underlug with Hearth clips as that is what I use in my 8 shot with Starline brass and that is what they were cut for. I used to have some clips that would only work with Winchester brass and they were .022. I do know that when I put Starline in them they would almost fall out. I do have some for Federal brass and they measure .027 and they also work for Starline. I am not sure what the Hearth clips measure.

I didn't know much about this and ordered a bunch a Ranch clips from Midway. Some brass would flop around like fish and others would be so tight you couldn't get a loaded clip to seat. I ended up sorting my brass (which is mixed) and some clips.I don't have any Starline. New Remington are floppy and easy to get in the clip. Winchester will roll in and are tight and the clip has to be straight. For what I do with it (steel and pins) I don't worry so much about the reload. I keep one good tight winchester reload on hand just in case. From somewhere on the interweb I learned that 38 super and 45 acp extractor grooves are standardized and 38/357 are not. That is why there are so many variations in the 627 stuff.

Hearthco clips are the best and tightest holding but also the most expensive.

He is on the board here or you can get from TK custom.

Good stuff.

Hearthco clips are excellent. I would say cry once and get the best, but I cry every time someone steps on my clips.

+1 on Hearthco clips. And Tom at TK Customs is great to deal with. I use the stainless steel solid moons in my 627 .38 super with starline brass. They measure .035. They hold the rounds snugly but not too tight as to bind up anything. They drop in really slick. And you can load them with the BMT loader. I haven't tried the blued steel version. My hope is the stainless steel may be more resistant to dry-fire practice drops on the garage floor and the unintentional footfall of a scorer and taper. But worth the money IMO.

The tightness of the fit depends as much on the brass used as well as the moonclips. I use the inexpensive moonclips from Ranch Products which provide a very tight fit with W-W nickeled brass, tight fit with W-W brass, a medidum tightness with Federal and R-P brass and a very loose and sloppy fit with Starline brass.

I use Heartco clips, exclusively, in USPSA/IPSC competiton in my S&W 610. I've tried most of the other suppliers but they don't compare. I shoot Federal to use their soft primers to minimize ignition failures. Good luck!
