Super 1050 Case feeder fail

Recommended Posts

Ok..a little back ground; when I really started to increase trigger time on my belt fed MG's I bought a Super 1050, specifically for .308/30'06. Worked great for 20K RDS. Now the case feeder will not drop a new, processed, new USGI or commercial 30'06 case into the case tube to feed the case shuttle. I've tried 50 rds and 400rds and both low and high speeds. I just watch the cases spin by the opening and not drop into the clear case tube. I've completely cleaned the shell plate (lg rifle), several times with alcohol until no lube or any residue is felt. I've done the same to the bowl. I have an extra Lg rifle case feeder plate and I tried it with same results...nothing but grabbing cases and dropping them into the tube by hand. It will occasionally drop a case by itself but more often I need to tip the cases by hand to get them to drop. This takes a 1k/hr machine and turns it into a 300rd/hr machine. BTW - I use two tool heads for each rifle caliber; one for brass processing and the other for loading and the machines are mounted to level steel plate benches next to each other and my RL works fine in 9mm and .223.

Can anybody shed some light on this or suggest a fix?

Thanks in advance!

There is a sliding tab at the exit to the feeder tub - did that get bumped while cleaning? This tab, if too far closed, would only stop the cases that are coming at it case-mouth first (unless closed really far). The cases that didn't drop would just keep going around and around. This would prevent any cases that happened to want to fall in the plate base-first from getting picked up.

Here is a picture of the tab from a post about getting rifle casefeed working on RL550B's - ignore the 3/4" instruction (experiment with that dimension):

Wait for Arizona to wake-up and call Dillon?

The tab is all the way open and the cases appear to not even begin to drop. I thought it was lube / dirt accumulation on the plate and bowl so I cleaned that thoroughly with alcohol and q tips / cotton rags but no difference. This is driving me nuts! Same plate works fine with .308 cases!

Check and make sure the long side of the notch in the shellplate isn't bevelled rearward at the bottom. This is done on the Magnum Rifle Case feed plates. Otherwise if the notches are clean so cases aren't sticking to it, not sure why. Probably 100 pieces of brass is a good amount for the bowl. Can you post pics?

Used two different plates and both are marked large rifle. Both have clean edges, sides and bottom. It appears that the case will not drop due to gravity. I checked the bowl for level and it is. Monkeyed around changing the "tilt" of the bowl to see if that made a difference and it didn't. Funny thing is that on "low" speed the cases just slip right by the drop opening. Not quite sure how to capture this with pics and am open to suggestions. Never heard of this happening. It really appears that the plate is spinning to fast and the cases are "sticking" to the plate and wont drop. Perhaps a new case feeder? New plate? I'm at a complete loss now and Big Sandy MG shoot is this weekend!

Spoke with Dillon Tech. today...gotta admit they were very nice but the feeder still doesn't drop brass. I was given dimensions to check and both plates were within spec....Now what? Drop another $40 and gas there and back to find out the new plate won't work? A new gripe is that my "deep large primer slide just broke in HALF at the forward end where the oval opening is. Bought this $80 primer slide to deal with USGI spec primers and it worked great..until it broke! I'm beginning to wonder if more vendor control is needed over there! Naturally since this is a 1050 and a commercial machine, the no BS warranty doesn't apply..same with the chipped #3 shell plate I got that's brand new never used but half of one of the ctg slots is missing. I apologize but this is getting too coincidental. Everything seems to be failing right around 10k rds (except for the .223 shell plate. It came that way.

Any case feeder explanations / solutions would be greatly appreciated. There's a buddy of mine in Prescott who owns NAM and he may be able to help me out.
