Alaskapopo
I have a bunch of lead 9mm bullets that I have not been able to get to work for me in my Glock with a Wolf barrel. Either the bullets were in accurate when pushed fast enough to cycle the gun or they would be accurate but not enough oomph to cycle the gun. I found out they are accurate and cycle in my new STI Steelmaster with 3.5 grains of Tightgroup (124 grain lead bullet) My question is does anyone else shoot cast lead in their open guns for steel at minor levels and if so how do you clean your comp? gng4life
Wow, you are shooting TG and lead...must look like a smoke stack One trick I learned on here is to spray some Dillon case lube in your comp after cleaning and it helps with the next cleanup after shooting. Heck, there are some guys on here shooting lead at Major PF...
Alaskapopo
I will try the case lube but don't have Dillon case lube. Pat
Noximus03
+1 for the Dillon case lube. when the alcohol dries up, it leaves a nice thin layer of lanolin. I used to run exposed base FMJ's through my open gun.....till the lead buildup got so bad that I didnt feel right about shooting it. TMJ/CMJ/JHP's strictly for me ever since. Still have to get a dentists pick and clean here and there, but its only once a month, if that.
ipscjoe
All I've ever shot is lead 145 grain bullets in my open gun with either aa7. Or aa5 powder. I use Teflon tape to wrap the comp and use an outers foul out electric bore cleaner. I'm not a gm but I did make master. Other friends of mine shoot 125's and don't have trouble. They clean the same way. Joe
Micah
When I shot Open with a Glock, one of my loads contained Precision (moly) bullets. I had to Dremel out the fouling, and never used them again. In my experience (and I am a GM), when working with high pressure rounds combined with a compensator, you should be using ammo that will not change your pistol over time. Sell the lead bullets to a Production shooter and pick up some Montana Golds or Zeros.
BrianATL
Not worth the trouble.
rooster mcbee
My experience with lead in the Super is that no matter how slow you run them, they are going to gunk up the comp. I agree, not worth the headache.
Freddie the Swede
I have shot lead bullet by the thousand in my open gun and the only thing I do is to shoot a handful of CMJ after each session of lead. Than usually takes out the lead buildup for me. //Freddie
simmons
So you bought a Steelmaster! Interesting. Not sure if you know but i shoot lead through mine all the time without issue. Including the Chatanika. I think it depends on the quality of the lead bullets you have. I've have in the past had problems with leading but that was mainly caused by the bullet quality and size. The ones i use now are very hard, sized at .356 and cause little to no leading in the barell or comp.

Glad you posted I knew you used lead but did not know if you did any extra effort to clean your comp. Hey if you can make it our three gun match is scheduled for memorial day weekend in may. I can load you some high cap mags and an AR. pat

Pull your recoil master, put a flgr in with a shock buff and a 10# spring in your pistol and run some major pf jacketed rounds through it. That will clean it out! Already thinking about the Alaska 3gun match, and yes i will have to borrow some full cap AR mags. Canadian laws........
