Sarge
Is it all the same? I was in Walmart today looking around and saw 2 cycle marine oil in a one gallon jug for less than $20. Can I use this in my yard tools?
TMC
Should be ok, yard tools are pretty simple and low performace. I use the cheap oil in my small Honda generator and its still going after 18 years. If it were a hi-output outboard, motorcycle or jet ski I'd pay for exactly when the manufacture recommends. Merlin Orr
If you look at the certifications of the oils for marine and small engine they appear to be totally different..... My Google came up with several threads where people had ruined yard equipment with marine oils... Edited October 12, 2012 by Merlin Orr
3gungeezer
Life time mechanic here, marine 2 cycle oils are designed to work at the lower temps found in a liquid-cooled(marine) engine. You might be able to get away with it but I use oil for aircooled engines in all my aircooled equipment.
mildot1
How often do you like to replace your yard tools???? I have used nothing but Lubrication Engineers 2 cycle in mine. The poulan 3400 was bought in 1986 and has worn out 4 bars and I can't count how many chains. The Husquavarna weedeater bought in 1990 has taken care of farm and three rental houses since. I'm on the 5th bump head. Heres a tip. SEA FOAM in the fuel, it works!!!! Mildot
whitedog
From my experience....if you maintain the equipment regular, marine oil is fine. Grew up on the water and used it in everything. Never had a problem...
jrb06
As already said marine two cycle oil is designed to work at the lower operating tempatures of the water cooled engine. The biggest killer of 2 cycle yard tools is improper mixing ratios, old gas(more than a month or two) and contamanated gas cans (rust sediment in can). Many of the fuels today have ethnol blended in them and that is a killer to 2 cycle gas for extended stroage. Also +100 for sea foam added to fuel do not use stabil. CocoBolo
The problem with yard tools is they sit all the time, so I just use the "weed eater" little bottles that have the fuel stabalizer. If I know I won't be using it for a while I drain the tank and run the carb dry to prevent the fuel system from getting stopped up. During non drought years I use up a gallon of weed eater fuel a month. But with the drought nope 2 gallons since Feb, and half that went in my truck. At that rate a gallon of oil would last longer that a 26# keg of Solo 1000. Been using lots of round up, no carb to stop up. Now Diesel is another story takes $40 to fill up the lawn mower. But to answer your question, use a synthetic outboard oil and be just under on the gasoline you mix, I do .95 gallon instead of 1, a little extra lube won't hurt a thing, stabil in anything not used in 3 or 4 weeks. triplesinglestack
the big key here is wether or not the engine is "injected" oil or pre-mix, and the oil can be made specifically for one or the other, but a few oils (Redline) can be used in both pre-mix and synthetic. Ultimo-Hombre
Like someone said earlier. Don't use modern marine mix in small displacement air cooled. Not worth it!
PROBIKE101
i find my 2 stroke cranks rust up and become tuff to pull over been using stable fogging oil after i dump the gas tank an run it out of fuel spray it down the carb while fuel is running it out my 2strokes pulled over nice this season.
