New and very proud American

A friend of mine called me and asked if I would help him buy a handgun. He knew very little about them but wanted to take advantage of his rights as an American. He listened to all my safety pointers, what to look for, what type of guns I like, etc. His one and only criteria was that the gun be American made. He recently became an American citizen and is so excited and, most of all, appreciative of what that means. I took him to several shops and when he finally picked one out, a Ruger SR9 compact, he asked about the process of actually buying it. I explained to him about the NICS check and on top of that, each state can have it's own rules. Since this is TX, there wasn't much else he had to do after the NICS. He was almost jumping for joy when the clerk handed it to him and told him congratulations on becoming a gun owner. This was a couple weeks ago. I had coffee with him today and he told me he now wants a 1911, American made of course. He has nice taste in cars as well. All his cars are American, including his pride and joy Viper. This election is the first time he gets to vote and he called the elections office to make sure he has everything he needs and weather or not he needs to register first, etc, etc. It is wonderful seeing someone who grew up in very different circumstances enjoy and truly appreciate what a lot of us take for granted.

So here is a toast to my friend and new fellow citizen.

It's a wonderful thing, and not something to be taken for granted. I'm not eligible for citizenship until March of 2013, missing the upcoming "event" in November. I went and made a video and posted it on YouTube asking people to vote in my place. You can search lifeislarge72 to view if interested. When I found out I could purchase firearms as a Permanent Resident, I was totally stoked. And now, here I am with a concealed carry permit, living the American Dream. Let's just pray it stays that way....

Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your thread, it's just a subject that's very near and dear to my heart. Thank you for your kind words and support.

Several of my coworkers and friends (from India) are working on the process of citizenship. I never really realized how tough the process was until I talked with them. Most came to the US on an HB-1 Visa which in many ways amounts to serfdom to the sponsoring company. Then spent years and money getting through the Green Card process. Now spending time and money to get through the Citizenship process. So my hat is off to all of you who have done it.

As someone who spends 1/2 of each year outside of the United State for work purposes, I always feel I appreciate living in the greatest country in the world. Those of us who spend a lot of time outside of our great country quickly appreciate what many Americans take for granted.

And yes, I drive US made cars, and all of my guns are Made in the USA too.

I just wish my computer and phone were as well, I'm an Apple Koolaid drinker
