New S1050 Station/Die Setup

I recently purchased a Super 1050 with all the bells and whistles including a powder check sensor/die and a Mr. Bullet feeder.

I would like input on station setups for how others with these items have theirs arranged, I'm currently going to load .45 ACP.

In the future I intend to load .308 and have heard of people being able to run the Dillon case trimmer on the same tool head as their reloading setup with other presses, but have yet to see it on the S1050 and wondered if there were others out there who had that kind of setup as well.

I would really appreciate any insight & examples of the non standard setups which comes in the box.

Well, I hate to tell you , but you won't be able to run the powder check die with the Mr. Bulletfeeder.....not enough stations.

As long as you check your powder drop every 100 rounds when you load primers you should be fine.

As far as loading/trimming on the same toolhead at the same time, you are asking for trouble. The lubed cases that get trimmed will have shavings all over, and any spilled powder will be all over the case stuck to the lube. It will be a mess. There will be someone that does it all the time and never spills anything.... :eatdrink: Tip of the hat to him.....

The rest of us will set up the toolheads to resize/swage/trim, tumble the brass clean, then set up the toolhead to run a universal decap through the case to clean out the flash hole, prime, dump powder, and then seat and or crimp if you want.

There is no free lunch.....

I believe that the Dillon trimmer has a vacuum set-up to remove all the shavings.

For a powder-check die and a bullet feeder separate from the sizing die, you will need to do seating and crimping in one step.

I REALLY don't trust any powder measure enough, especially after 40 years of reloading, to run without eyeballing or "Lock-Out" die checking every case for a proper powder charge and would much prefer to check every case than to save some small amount of time with a bullet feeder.

The real question is: Do you shoot enough rifle (bottleneck) to make the 1050 an efficient press. Most are too into the "voodoo" of case prep to ever really use the progressive efficiently for rifle rounds. If you accept that the "voodoo" steps that the long-range benchrest crowd use (mostly under the assumption that "it couldn't hurt" and not based on actual target proof of effectiveness) may be thrown out for some small increase in group size, then you might be able to use the press efficiently. However, for most bottleneck cases, the only steps needed are: size/expand neck, prime, and seat bullet. I find that by trimming cases to the minimum trim-to length, that I can trim fired rounds and not have them exceed max length when sized--however, I do still check this just to be sure.

Your reloading of bottleneck cases could be done on the Lee Pro 1000 about as efficiently. The 1050 comes into its own if you go through a lot of military brass where the built-in swagger pays for itself. Once the case is swaged, you don't need that operation again.

Hi -

Total newb question here: aren't there 8 stations on a 1050? Why in the above comments are you only counting 7? Surely I'm missing something.

I've been running a 550 for a few years now and am ready to step up to a 1050 (I think). Am glad I came across this post because I had been planning to run a bullet feeder as well as a powder check system.

I appreciate any further information on this.

Station 1 is Insert Brass only, station 2 Size and Deprime, station 3 Swage, station 4 Prime, Station 5 Powder Drop, Station 6 (normally open but this is where you can put the Powder Check) I have Bullet Feeder here, station 7 Bullet Seater Die, station 8 Crimp Die.

I find that I do not need the powder check. I stand in a position that I can visually confirm powder in each and every case before the bullet drop. If you really want the powder check, you can put it in station 5 moving the MBF to station 6 and finally use a combo seating/crimp die in station 7 (RCSB makes one).
