Talk me out of a SIG TacOps?

I wanted to see what others thought about the SIG TacOps compared to say, a STI Trojan in .45 for SS and IDPA CDP. I was at my LGS and saw a TacOps for $880 which seems like a killer price.

What do you think of that as a comp gun? It's already got a magwell, I actually prefer a well executed external extractor, and it comes with 4 mags. Even after a trip to the smith to get a trigger job (the stock trigger is pretty heavy) it would still be considerably cheaper than a Trojan. When I handled it, it felt extremely well put together and has a good brand name behind it.

The other thing is that the same store had a Springfield Range Officer for $700, would that be a better gun after putting the difference between the two back into it?

There is a strong possibility your smith may have to "execute" the external extractor while he/she does the trigger work if you go for the Sig. My 1st vote would be Trojan then the SA with the Sig coming in last. You would probably be happier with a STI Spartan than the Sig if price is a major consideration.

Pretty simple IMHO. Last I checked, Sig dimensions are different, therefore you would need a different holster, no?

External extractor, not a fan. And the biggest difference? STI is a HUGE supporter of competitive shooting. Plus they produce weird 1911's like the newest "zombie" model one.

No thanks! :roflol:

The SIG trigger will go to about 3.5 with a C&S spring ($7). You can get a traditional SIG slide so holsters will work but if you get the square slide Blade Tech has holsters. The extractor works and the finish is great. Of the guns mentioned here it gives you the most for your money. The checkering alone is a major upgrade over the others. I have an XO and it runs great and is accurate. zero finish wear with a year's worth of draws and matches in AZ dust. It doesn't quite stack up against the DW's I have but it is 90% of the gun for half the cost.

Go for it if it makes you happy.

Thanks for the reply, that's a great report from a SIG owner. I'm not worried about the holster issue, a friend of mine makes Kydex holsters so I would just ask him to make me one as I am a lefty and there's probably 0 lefty weird SIG slide holsters floating around.

I've just had so many problems with internal extractors that I want to try something different.

I have one and are now buying a springer trophy match for ss classic as I cannot use mine in this division here in nz. Mine is wickedly accurate and I have never had an extraction or feeding problem after 3000 plus rounds. The trigger was horrible and I had this worked on and at the same same had a fibre optic front sight installed and a bomar style adjustable rear. Trigger pull is now around the 2.5 lb or a little higher, replaced trigger with an egw extended one. Depending what you will use it for buy it, the RO does have everything ready to go but no ambi safety. Plus sig mags are great.

I was wondering about the quality of the mags, since it comes with 4 I was afraid that this is a cheaper gun and they build the cost of the extra mags into the price.

So your trigger was crappy? Did it clean up after extensive dry firing or did you have to take it to the smith to get it cleaned up?

Mags are superb, would not hold 8 rds to start with (some of them) but after leaving some overnight loaded up the spring soon lossened up, I own 8 of these mags and all function flawlessly.

Trigger improved with use but was vastly improved after the work by the smith, bang for buck these things are hard to beat. I have shot a 11/2 inch group at 25 metres freestyle with this (I wish I always shot like that). Go ahead and buy one and then get some cool grips from Larry davidson for it.
