The dot with reading glasses

I took a few years off from shooting and my eyes have degraded during that time, so at the range I put on my reading glasses and things were much clearer as far as seeing the dot but I was still getting misses on the plate rack. Could the reading glasses cause a distortion in what I think I am seeing? And just for grins I took the scope and mount off and cleaned the rack quickly with no sights. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi Rick,Welcome back. My story is similar to yours. I took 12 years off from shooting before the bug bit me again. My problem was that in 12 years, I was into my 3rd glasses prescription. My readers worked well for seeing iron sights, but the targets were too blurry. With my open gun the dot was blurry as well as the targets. What I discovered was that my very first reader prescription was what I needed to see the dot at arms length as well as the targets. For iron sights, I ended up with my current reader lens in my right eye and my first reader in the left, the best of both worlds.

To answer your question, yes, I have seen distortions with my readers. I think that they put more "prescription" in the middle of the lens than on the edges. If I start looking up through the top of my glasses when I shoot I definitely get a different sight picture than in the middle.

I think using readers is a very wrong idea. I read using +2.25 glasses, but if I were to put them on at the range, everything except the very close objects would be a blur. So at the range, using a dot, I put on +1.00 glasses, and what they do is bring the whole world into focus, it becomes sharp. I can do with just plain safety glasses, but they give me slightly fuzzy picture.

So my recommendation to you is to try something very mild, like that +1.00. I presume your vision problem is akin to mine - the normal slight age-related degradation. I buy mine on Amazon or at Walmart.
