Transitions

Transitions.

After you you've done something, it's time to go do something else.

And there's no point in looking at what you've already done.

You gotta look at the new thing and DRIVE everything you've got to it as quick as humanly possible.

And then you gotsta learn to do it faster.

Wait, is this a shooting article or Old Man Anderson's life lesson #4,765?

Who knows...but I can fix that. Time to focus up.

Transitions are one of the biggest weaknesses I see in developing

shooters.

(Ha. I typed Hooters by mistake 3 times. Developing hooters! Tee Hee)

In most cases, it comes from:

a. Being more concerned with "splits."

b. In extreme cases, double tapping.

c. Uncertainty about accuracy, maybe even looking for hits on the target.

So:

a. Forget about splits. They should be dictated by an acceptable sight picture. That's an oversimplification, but last time I checked this shit is still free, so ya get what ya get.

b. If someone says "double tap" to me and they are not talking about 2 chicks at the same time, I may vomit.

c. Call your Damn shots.

Now that we've solved those issues, let's get this transition thing dialed in with a simple dry fire drill.

Set up two targets, at least 21 feet away and rougly 12 feet apart.

In slow motion, shoot two "shots" on one.

With your gun still on the first target, Look at the next target.

Then, bring your gun into your vision and acquire an acceptable sight picture.

Shoot two "shots" on the new target.

With your gun still on the second target, look at the first target.

Bring your gun into your vision and acquire an acceptable sight picture.

Now do this faster.

The big idea is that you AGGRESSIVELY look to the new target immediately after calling the last shot of the current target.

AGGRESSIVELY.

If you are an Alpha-gobbling-shark-monster this will feel very good.

And you DO NOT "ride" the gun over to the new target while looking at the gun. This is major suckage. Avoid major suckage.

(Unless we're talking about 2 chicks at the same time. Sorry, couldn't resist. I'm easily amused)

Remember kids, if you are not shooting you are losing. And while we can't control recoil, we can drive the gun to a new target much quicker than we think we can.

Now get to work.
