AustinT
I fear that you're about to find out the hard way that .233/.308 will completely destroy the targets you linked. I really don't think A36 is going to hold up.
smarcus3
Those are pistol only. I got ar500 for the rifle
JesseCJC
I actually just bought 6 Sheppard's hooks as well and ordered 6 pistol targets. I don't think they are strong enough to hold a big rifle target though? What type of steel are you hanging? 8in rounds of 3/8 ar500. I don't see any reason why they wouldn't hold anything a bit larger but I have not tried it. I got the idea from Hickok45 and his youtube channel. He said that it what he uses in his FAQ vid and they hold well for him as well.
smarcus3
the 8" rounds are just a36 steel which after looking online seems adequate for a 9mm. Just got back from the range. Pictures coming.
jmorris
I have put 300 win mag into 3/8" ar500 "hunting bullets" without issue at 150 yds. Old Yellow box Norinco .223 will pit at that range.
Don Springer
For just you it should last a while. The one below is the simple design I use for 3 gun but I have had hits on the conduit legs before, even as close as 100 yds (NRA Police match). It's not as compact as your design though. The copy of the larue is the one I use most. It stays setup here at home, I have charging ports and stick a solor charger on it every now and then. As an engineer you might like the "guts". Have you got more detailed pics of the flasher?
smarcus3
Here are the images from my first trip with the target. I shot around 75 .223 and 75 9mm at it. The first ten shots or so ... The side splatter from those rounds. The target after shooting. Some minor damage, though I think the 9mm threw more splatter than the .223s The bottom rails showing some wear but nothing major. The 3/8" AR 500 steel held up like a champ. I shot from both sides just to test it out. Edited September 23, 2012 by smarcus3
jmorris
Looks like it will work and pretty simple to swap out the wood. Have you got more detailed pics of the flasher? Pretty simple and takes no tools to set up. The EMT slips into the brackets on the ends and the cross bar is locked in with a T'ed bolt. The flasher part uses an oillite bushing and is adjustable so you can properly adjust it, if you happen to be shooting at it from above or below level ground. Looks like this when you hit it and like this before a hit.
