Dillon 650 - Case Stuck on Powder Die

Recommended Posts

Was in the process of reloading this afternoon when everything came to a sudden and complete stop. Thought it was a primer stuck in the case but after taking the shellplate off I found that a case is stuck on the powder die. I can only assume it is the wrong caliber although I thought the resizing die would have caught that. Any help is greatly appreciated as to how to get it off as it is on pretty tight. Thanks

Well I was loading 40 and I am sure there is powder in the case. I also have a new primer in the case. It is on there pretty tight as it kept the handle from returning all the way up. I have not taken the toolhead off the press yet but I guess that is the next step in the process.

Being new to reloading (9 months) it is stuck on the part that pours the powder into the case. It will rotate 360 freely which I am assuming is normal. I have refained from getting to physical as I do not want to damage anything. Once the toolhead is off I will be able to determine the caliber of the case

Probably too late but don't take the toolhead off. Just take the powder measure off and push the powder funnel up through the powder die.

Yes, the powder funnel will spin freely inside the die. Perfectly normal.

Get it out and get some channel locks or vise grips on the case. Just don't go whalin' on the primer and you should be fine.

You may have ran a 10mm case all the way up onto the funnel?

Well Kevin, I don't care what anybody else says about you, YOU ARE THE MAN !! I have learned a lot about my 650 from these type of episodes and while I did nothing to cause this that I can think of, it is these type of problems that make you more familiar with the machine. Now, don't stray too far off as I have to put it back together. I have my manual and believe I remember how I took it apart. It was definitely on to stay. Used 2 sets of locking pliers and a tourniquet to keep from scratching the Dillon part. It was a 40 S&W case so I have no clue why it would have gotten stuck. Thank you so very much for your help. You got to love BE and its members, they are some of the greatest folks around. If you were close enough I would definitely treat you to your favorite beverage of choice. Not going to Area 4 in Thiboceaux by any chance?

That's cool man. Glad it worked out.

You do realize of course, the only reason I narrowed it down was because I have been there and done that! cheers.gif

I have gotten good advice from other members of this great board in the past. I was simply paying it forward.

I would take some 800 grit paper to the funnel to make sure it didn't get too nicked up. I'm sure you don't want to go through this again!

Once back together just check the powder funnel depth before yanking on the arm at full power. Something may have come out of adjustment causing the deep plunge of the funnel.

Remember it only takes the smallest of flares on the case.
