How to Carry Enough Shotgun Rounds

Recommended Posts

So I just looked at the stage description for our monthly local match at CCC...

54 shotgun targets...40 birdshot, 10 buck, 3 slugs, and a (bird) spinner as the finale...so, I figure, dead minimum 60 rounds. Just carrying that much is going to be a challenge, plus keeping them sorted so the right round goes to the right target.

Any suggestions?

I've got 4 6-round CCW caddies, plus a SAW pouch that I used to hold my Garand clips at LaRue. And if I wear pants instead of shorts, I have cargo pockets.

I'll add the stage description:

"BIG shotgun stage in the center bay called " The Ring of Fire", a no BS, no running, stand and deliver on 54 targets (40 birdshot, 10 buckshot, 3 slugs and the spinner shot with bird shot)."

So what I'm thinking is this: load slugs + buck to start, with extra slugs and buck in the R and L cargo pockets, respectively (I load weak hand). Engage slug targets, followed by buck. Make sure the gun is empty, then go to town on the bird targets, with nothing but bird shot in the caddies and SAW pouch, maybe set aside some #6 or maybe even #4 bird for the spinner.

Stages like that are why a take a Chameleon load 2 belt and 7 caddies with me. Before I had the Load 2 belt I would tear the top flaps off of a box of birdshot and place the shells back in with the base facing the same direction(whichever direction works best for your load method) and place it in my loading hand cargo pocket. That gives you 25+24+9=58. Maybe you and a friend can share caddies to double up? Until you actually see the stage you won't really know where and how to sort and place all of your shells. Either way it is going to fun

For Ironman, another large round count match, I always carry 6 4 round caddies in the front and now a 3x3 on the back on my belt and have a side saddle with another 8 rounds. That gets me through most of the stages and provides OK shell segregation. If I think I need more I have a very simple chest rig with another 5 6 round caddies.

I have seen other shooters keep all the shell caddies on a chest rig, 4 four rounds to the weak side and 2 4x4 on the strong side so he can go prone correctly.

I ended up with a box of bird in a SAW pouch on my strong side, plus the buck and slugs on the table provided.

Loading killed me, especially when it went to strong hand (I usually load weak hand due to running a Garand).

How do you avoid burning your thumb/hand when loading strong hand?

Your barrel must have been smoking hot by the end of that stage :surprise: I did the same thing once and everything is weakhand now. I'm faster weakhand anyways.

Yeah...I've got a nice blister on my left thumb. If I was doing only strong hand loads, I would have worn a glove on my left hand.

If you are gonna be switching hands you won't be using a glove unless you have time to take one off or put one on.

Gain some weight perhaps. A 64" waist works wonders when you need to roll with 60 shotshells.

Yup us big boys have it a lil easyer... I'm not 64" but a 40" does help. Lil guys have to be more creative.

Yeah...34" is not a lot of belt space to work with. 6'2" is plenty of vertical space, I just need to figure out how to make use of it.

I have seen an above mentioned style product this is similar except that it has a sliced firm lid covering that you can put your hand through the collapsible lid (which keeps the rounds from bouncing out) and take out the rounds that you need. The lid covering keeps the rounds from bouncing out. However, I did not know the name of the product or who manufactured it.
