Clearing problems on 650

Recommended Posts

What are some of the methods to clear problems on a 650 press and restart? For example when a case with a crimped primer pocket makes its way into station #2 and the primer will not seat.

Can the whole process be suspended so that the other rounds on the shell plate be finished through the cycle without sending unused primers down the ski ramp?

If its crimped where you can't seat the primer, normally, I take out the problematic case and replace it with a resized/deprimed case which I have prepared earlier. Normally I have about a bin of resized/deprimed case just for this case and also if i get a case of 380.

Now if you dont have prepped brass for station 2, just take out the problematic case and move on. You'll have 1 extra primer. That is all.

EDIT to add: the .380 part is when im loading 9mm. I dont see much crimped 40. Also handy when reloading 45 when you get those pesky small primers.

here are my methods of dealing with problems.

smashed case or berdin primed case. raise the handle slightly use second smalles allen wrench to pull out the suspect case from under the sizing die. Use same allen wrench to position a fresh case under the sizing die and then pushing the handle down sizing the case and moving on.

Crimped primer. I have 2 methods. One is I have several sized and de-primed cases sitting there ready to go so I just replace the one with the crimped primer. The other is I pull the case and use my super swage to swage the primer pocket and then put it back.

Light charge or heavy charge. I pull the button, pull the case and save it for the end of my session where I stick it in station 2 and cycle it through.

+1 on having spare brass. I keep a few resized/deprimed and some resized&primed. If the primer gets stuck in sideways or just will not go in the brass, I remove the primer and brass and insert at resized& primed brass. If there seems to be a primer pocket issue or crimped brass, I just stick in one of the resized/deprimed brass. I use a simple lee hand primer to prime them if needed. I set the offending brass aside and deal with it when I'm through loading. Then I checkout any problem brass.

If you have a problem with a case in station #1 are there any tricks to remove and replace the case? Do you use the Allen wrench like a hook to pull the case all the way back through the station #1 locator? I have been lowering the ram so that I can manually pull the case feed slide and cam back and load a new case in the locator.
