1x4 vs. 1.5x6

OK, getting ready to "pull the trigger" on a Burris MTAC here in the next week or so.

I have never had an AR before, but have shot lots of precision rifle with higher powered scopes. So my question is:

Which one to get? I am seeing lots of threads about the newer 1.5 x 6 scopes out there, and it looks like the biggest difference is the field of view @100 yards.

109' @ 1x

33' @ 1.5x

I might shoot some 3Gun, and will definitely shoot some plates out to 600 yards

6x is a big advantage at 600 yards, but is the 1.5 too much of a trade off at the shorter distances and hoser stages for 3gun?

Thanks in advance for your help

I have an MTAC. 1.5X would be a definite disadvantage IMO. The thing to remember about the MTAC is that the reticle is not a precision type. It's great for speed but as the distance increases and the target shrinks the 2.4 MOA center dot starts covering the target. For shooting steel out at 400 yds. it's fine, but it's just too course for tiny groups at 600 yds. I rarely shoot at 600 so for my needs in 3gun the fast reticle, wide field of view, 1X are what I wanted. Also 3 gun stuff just came out with a new polymer zoom lever for the MTAC, $40, ultra light weight,I got mine last week and will be using the 1st time this Sat.

Burris Mtac 1.5 x 6 is lighter and only approximately 1 inch longer...............

.5 magnification doesn't make much difference but the 2 x at the other end can make a big defferenece.................

I go with the 1.5 x 6 over the Mtac 1 x 4 any day!

Totally disagree with you. You generally shoot most of your targets inside 100 yards at most matches there will be a lot more targets where having a true 1x will be beneficial over 1.5x vs the few long targets where 6x is better than 4x. Granted I like both and thats why I have a 1-6x. But 1x on the bottom end is more important than 6x on the top.
