blind bat
I've been loading nothing but Federal 100 small pistol primers since they became accessible again following the 2008 elections. I've probably used somewhere between 20-30k and never had one fail to fire that I can remember. I loaded around 1200 rounds for a class this past weekend. I probably shot half of that batch and had 10 rounds not go off. All had good primer strikes and refused to fire even after a second strike and running them through the instructor's gun (he was running CCI ammo at the time). I'm pretty sure this can't be a light strike issue. I pulled two of the dud rounds when I got home. The powder (WST) looked fine, as did the flash hole in the case and the primer's anvil. The primers were still bright green around the anvil. It was raining pretty hard during the class and some of my ammo (stored in a 30 cal ammo can) did get wet. Is it possible that moisture could have been drawn in around the primer pocket and contaminated the primers? Has anyone else had any recent experience with bad Federal primers? DWFAN
I've had 2 that would not go bang, ~20K rounds from 2011-2012. They didnt get wet, unless it was case lube. They wouldnt fire on multiple subsequent strikes either. I didnt bother to pull the bullet to check them out though.
ErichF
I reloaded a batch of 9mm rounds recently from a 1000 pack of Federals a few months ago. I had a lot that would not pop, maybe 2-3/100. It was very frustrating. I am shooting an XDm 525 with standard weight striker spring. Since those Federal primed rounds have all been fired off, all my other batches from CCI #500 or Winchester WSP have been 100%.
