All the info is for LSWC or SWC..... Is there different data for RN ?

Thanks.

Thanks.

I've read a lot of different info on LSWC but nothing for RN.......

I just want to make sure my OAL is accurate. 230gr Factory ammo is 1.264-1.268 and I'm not sure if that changes for 200gr.

Each gun is different and usually has a sweet spot for OAL. I always pick a powder charge when working on a load (starting low of course), and then load at various lengths starting from the longest that will fit in my magazine and/or in my barrel, then work down. I usually see at least one length that is great, with the rest being decent and one or two lengths that are horrible in terms of accuracy (for each gun).

If you don't want to take that much time, then just pick an OAL that works in your gun and work your load up with that length; there really isn't a magic number.

FWIW, I've used several brands of LSWC and most are loaded between 1.245 and 1.255. I run a lot of 231/HP38 under those bullets, normally in the 5 to 5.2 gr range for paper punching. LRN should load pretty much the same, and 230 gr lead should function at similar charge weights (depending on your spring weights, etc.).

Update.... I loaded 15 rounds each of the following:

1.240-1.249

1.250-1.258

1.262-1.269

200gr

LRN

4.9gr of WIN231

CCI LP

Now I will take then and see which ones cycle best in my baby.

I also checked the charge after every 7 rounds just to make sure since I am new to this and want to be safe.

Thoughts on my process?

^ I would check that over a chrono if looking for Major PF. Probably nice and soft shooting @ 4.9gr. W231.

imho: 4.9 gr. of W231 would be short of major PF.

fwiw:

Most 5" .45ACP W231 loads topped with a 200 grain RN/SWC for Major PF seems to float at 5.5-5.7grains.

*** CAUTION: YMMV, Load Cautiously, Look for Pressure Signs, & Go slow from your current load up ***

Here is what I load. Don't have my chrono # on hand.

Xtreme Plated 200gr. RN .451

LP .45ACP Brass

WIN LPP

W231 5.6 grains

OAL 1.245"

Crimp'd at: .471"

* I run these in a Les Baer 5"; 16/17 lb. Recoil; 21 lb. Main

Ok update.... Just returned from the range with 18 rounds from each range of OAL. Every round fed and ejected fine except for 1. It did feel that the longer OAL had less recoil than the shorter OAL. Is this something that happens with shorter OAL's?

Now it's time to work the charge up slowly.

I throw 5.0gr of 231 under 200gr LSWC's. I run the same oal for both 200 and 230 LSWC's, 1.250". I've found that the round nose bullets have variance between some of the manufacturers as far as nose profile. In that case I light crimp at the top of the lube groove.

When you change pal you are messing with internal specs of the cartridge. Longer oal = more case volume. 1.240 to 1.250 is usually recommended. Adjust powder charge from there. Lee FCD will eliminate most feeding issues.

The reason the longer oal felt softer is that you changed the dimensions ie the powder air ratio and experienced a different burn rate, and probably less velocity.
