Equipment trailer build

Recommended Posts

New club opening up in north Texas and the range doesn't work well for carting everything around like has been done in the past. So we are working on a trailer that will haul everything at once.

Starting with a $50 boat trailer and adding everything "skid" style. A angle iron box at the very rear holds all of the feet for the walls and the popper rack is up above that and allows them to be stacked ready to be used with the angle already in them.

Put all of the real heavy stuff in the rear so hopefully we won't need to move the axle forward once all of the walls (going to be A frame style, 8' and sticks on one side and 4'/6' walls on the other), stands, fault line sticks and buckets for the bays are on there.

Excellent use for an old boat trailer. Its looking good.

Looks like the racks will hold 18 poppers. Add all the other goodies, that will be one heck of a load.

Where will the new club be located? About 15 years ago I shot at the Dallas Pistol Club when it was on Belt Line Road. It would be nice to see something located north of town.

The name of the new club is DFW Practical Shooting Association. Still working on the website for the club but it will soon be dfwpsa.com We will be shooting at a new range off of 121 near Anna TX. The range is called Red Zone Ranch redzoneranch.com. It is less than 30 min from 380 and 75.... much closer that we have been driving. We will be shooting uspsa on the 2nd Sat and 4th Sunday starting in September. Any questions feel free to contact me mike@selectarms.com.

Thanks

As there are not prints for this project I figured another day of work/waiting for photos would be better than a few words.

The rear popper holders are only part of the frame the "A" frame that holds the stands and walls is also tied into the frame. Full it will hold 36 x8' walls, 6' walls, 4' walls, 144 target stands, 18 poppers and a bunch of stands for the walls.

In the center of the A frame will be the 2x2 foot fault lines. Barrels for stakes and spots for 5 gal buckets of other stuff are to come.

Well the little boat axle didn't look so hot after we piled everything on there so we swapped it out for a 7500# axle and moved it a foot forward while we were at it as it had a bit too much weight up front for the 4 wheeler.

Also added a box for all of the stakes up front and an expanded metal platform for swingers, drop turns, tx stars, 5 gallon bucket for each bay and all the other stuff that we will need but not leave on the trailer.

Interesting design. We are in the process now of setting up 5 trailers. One stage per trailer. Each will have about 6-8 walls, braces, target stands, sticks, steel, stakes, fault line etc. We will also distribute some of our movers among the trailers. We will have at least one additional trailer for movers and maybe a smaller one for classifier stages. Having everything mobile is the only way. We already have a similar set-up at the second club we all shoot at and it it sweet!

Park the trailer at the pit and the crew builds the stage, at the end of the match the squad on that stage tears it down and loads the trailer, all we need to do is to direct the traffic so that the trailer is loaded neatly. Makes set-up and tear-down a much easier faster job. Allows more shooting is less time.

If any club has the storage space we can strongly endorse having trailers for your match prep.

It worked...a few mods on the books but a lot less a$$ whoop than what we do with the IDPA gear. One truck, one trip (for now). Not locked down like in a shipping container but if your not a scrap man not a lot of call for a boat trailer with stuff all over it.

Anyone building a trailer needs to know that for towing on the road, at least 60% of the weight put on the trailer needs to be in front of the axle in order to prevent fishtailing at highway speeds. If the trailer fishtails it can cause you to lose control of the towing vehicle and have a bad accident. :o For towing around the range at low speed doesn't matter.

This is correct, not having enough tongue weight will take you on a hell of a ride. Having too much is also a problem. I'll also throw in that a boat trailer axle is too far to the rear for what we did. The thought of all the poppers and 3/8 plate steel wall feet on the back was to help balance the load.

In the end "what if we also had..." made it too heavy on the tounge thus the moving forward of the axle.

Nothing up front weighs a lot but there is a lot of it. Sort of like the question, "what does a ton of feathers weigh?"

This is a pic of one of our 5 stage trailers. Base trailer cost is about $1000.00. There is about 2 lengths of 2 x 2 angle and a sheet of 3/4 plywood per trailer. Took us about a long day to build the trailers and another to get them loaded.

Never have seen using pre made fence as a wall, how to they hold up with being moved around? Also how do you store all of the trailers?

Those walls seem common in PA & NJ. They make for nice stages. We grabbed a couple for our local club. They are pretty heavy though.

Trailer storage is accomplished in cargo containers -- think the box from an 18 wheeler without the wheels. They're 40 feet long and hold 4 trailers for us, as long as we lower the tongue wheel, so the back of the next trailer to be backed in can slide over the tongue of the previous trailer.....

IIR, I'll try to take some pictures....
