usmc1974
I don't understand this. I have a Remington 700 R5 18.5 barrel 308. Before I chroned my ammo I ran 5 rounds though the gun to warm it up. the first set of 5 ran 2623,2620,2630,2628 and 2636 ok. the set of 5 ran 2490,2445,2450,2460 and 2448. it was sunny no wind and about 95 degrees.IEEE.. Hi-Power Jack
How far were you from the chrono?
usmc1974
How far were you from the chrono? 7 yards my rifle has a QBC muzzlebrake so very little gas goes farward.
Dan Sierpina
A cloudless sky is not the ideal condition to chrono in. The bullets don't always give a good shadow over the screens under those conditions. A slightly overcast day is best. I've used the screen "difusers" or whatever they call them (to give the effect of a cloudy sky) and not had as good a reading as real clouds. That's with and Ohler 33 and Pact Mk4 timer with the screens.
Stlhead
I chrono at 10 feet, and if it is not cloudy I put an Ipsic target over the chrono white side down to keep he sun off if I can't set the thing in the shade. I have had good results wit this, but you need to remember that chronos run on voodoo black magic, and you must sacrifice farm animals and drink lots of beer to make them operate at peak efficiency. Drink the beer after shooting, or a chrono god sacrifice may be had.

This long range stuff is frustrating and confusing.

Don't confuse velocity with accuracy. You can get the ragged holes while the speed you look for may be an increase of the powder charge away. 3 gun doesn't require tiny groups, but having good groups and good velocity for steel targets out past 300 yards is desired. Keep at it, keep a supply from the same loading as a control and chrono under differing light conditions. You'll get the hang of when to leave the chrono at home and just shoot targets. And, save the beer for later.
