I am currently running a stock STI TruSight .40 strictly steel matches. I would like to swich out the heavy recoil master for a one piece tungsten guide rod then play with lighter spring weights. Here is my problem. The TruSight is a 4.15" barrel. I have been told that a Colt Commander one piece guide rod will work. Problem with that is I cannot find a Commander length tungsten guid rod. I have even considered running a government length tungsten guide rod with commander length spring and either cutting it to length or leaving it stick out the front under the barrels expansion chamber. Next question would be do you recomend buying government length springs and cutting coils or just buy commander springs?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Speedy.

I'd just cut the guide rod to lenght and cut coils off govt lenght spring, did that for a STI 4.0 Tactical years ago.

Thanks HoMiE,

I kind of hate the idea of cutting almost 1" off the front of a tungsten guide rod. The whole idea behind it is to place more weight to the front of the gun.

Does anyone know off hand how many coils you cut to bring a govt. length spring to bring it down to a Commander length?

Thanks again,

Speedy.

Found this on another forum and basically same thing I did to spring commander lenght.

The quick trick...and cheaper to boot...is to clip a standard 16-pound, 32-coil GM spring down to about 25 coils, and check for bind...trimming a half-coil off at a time until it binds no more. Most readily accept 24 or 24.5 coils.

Note: Trimming the GM-length recoil springs won't work with Officer's Models, or in any Commander that has a reverse-plug recoil system.
