Autocomp for Production CZ Shadow Custom

OpenDot

Recommended Posts

I shoot B Open as most of you know but when I feel the need to work on my reloading skills i slap on my Shadow custom and go buy some whitebox ammo.

Well, I'm going to shoot C production for the High Desert Classic (if my knee is healed and Doc clears me to run) and I have 6,000+ 124gr JHP bullets, 10,000 WSRP, 12,000 brass and I have 16lbs of autocomp. So, I would like to setup and load 1,500=2,000 rounds for practice and the match but don't want to change my 550 much or go spend money on stuff that won't make THAT much of a difference. I'm also affraid of buying some stock OEM 9mm going to the match and not making PF...so I wanna use what I have. I have a chrono as well.

Anybody using autocomp for minor in a shadow custom and have a starting loadout?

Will the WSRP be an issue in the CZ?

Thanks for your help guys.

Randy, I wouldn't use the rifle primers. Just go buy a couple thousand SPP's or SPMP'S. I couldn't tell you about the autocomp, but powder being cheap, just get a lb or 2 of N320.

Yeah but i don't want to switch powders. Figured as much on the SPP primers

Jojo Vidanes just returned from the Equador 2012 Open where he shot production as a part of a top notch team representing the US. He trained over the past number of months using a CZ SP-01 Shadow. I asked him one Saturday what his load was and he said 5.3 gr of Autocomp at 1.155. Not really sure about bullet, but it was a JHP 124gr. I don't think it was MG because I can't load those in my shadow past 1.090, however, he may have a reamed barrel. He said its a great load and loves it.

My buddy was using it @ 4.7gr and a 124. It shot fine. Not as soft as some, but wont beat you up like slower powders either.

Hodgdon lists it 4.7-5.2 or so and a 125fmj.

Work it up like any other load. It's fine for minor, and a 9mm has enough pressure to burn it off. He was shooting it in .45, and had all kinds of unburnt powder to deal with.

Bullet Weight (Gr.) Manufacturer Powder Bullet Diam. C.O.L. Grs. Vel. (ft/s) Pressure Grs. Vel. (ft/s) Pressure

125 GR. SIE FMJ Winchester AutoComp .355" 1.090" 4.7 1055 28,900 PSI 5.2 1120 33,300 PSI

WSR primers may be an issue with light strikes, and may not seal with the minor load pressure. Just have to test it, or buy a box of Fed SPP and be done with it.

nobody has tried autocomp in minor? :(

I've shot AutoComp in minor, 124gr MTG OAL 1.145 5.2gr of AutoComp = 135pf. Like the 115gr bump powder to 5.6gr.

Is it soft shooting? No Does it go bang? yes. Is it accurate? Yes

I've also shot major in my Shadow, don't have to change my load at all 7.0gr of AC OAL 1.165 about 172pf, just a tick snappy. Knocks down steel with authority. :surprise:

MG124JHP

WSPP

Hodgdon lists 1.090 as the oal, start low and work up at whatever oal your gun will run. Youll be fine at 4.6-4.7 and going up..

Whats the big deal, dont you use almost twice that amount of powder for major?..lol.

Itll probably be softer than wwb.

I left off the CMJ after MTG. The RN bullet will allow about .02 longer than the JHP, when compared to Zero JHP. Manson reamer any size you want. If you got any IMR7625 laying around it works good in minor and shoots pretty soft at 4.8gr 124 MTG CMJ 1.145. Another open powder so just thought you might have some of that # you tried for major that did not work well.

AC is right next to HS-6 on the burn rate chart so this could be some useful anecdotal info. I recently loaded up some 9mm 124gr Extreme FP using 6.3 grains of HS-6 for my 9mm carbine. For hoots, i shot some through my 5" M&P9L and chrono'd it. Average vel through the pistol was about 1070 fps with a PF of 132 and the recoil definitely thumped harder than my usual minor load of 4.3gr N320 which measures in at 1090 FPS and 133 PF. When i say the recoil was harsher, it was more like factory ammo since N320 has such a mild recoil impulse. Not an optimal powder for minor, but still do-able. I don't know how these loads equate to your AC loads, but i suspect they will perform and feel similar.
