stinsonbeach
This "thread" started out elsewhere in my quest to get an AR x39 up & running - quite successfully finally, w/ many thanks to the help I received here. But now I'm asking YOU what would your optimal "bug-out" gun (singular) be. I can make a case for all kinds & calibers, but I'm not satisfied yet. So I'll keep looking & gathering info w/ your help. Any & all suggestions welcome - but like your jr. high school math teacher use to say: "...prove it..."! -jb ps I have at time considered .22 (rifle weight, bullet weight, ability to stay on POA, availability of "cans", etc.); 9mm (rd count, pistol / rifle caliber, etc); .308 (AR 10); etc. but never considered a bolt gun or the .223 - "...not enough gun...". That last sentence alone should get me crucified!

I mean, yo, it ain't like we ain't all ain't thought of that shiznick at some point, knowhaddayemean? Personally, I think a good fly swatter or bug spray is better than a gun for getting bugs, but as long as your housemates, neighbors, and local LEOs don't mind, sure, get bugs out the hard way. That last sentence alone should get me crucified! I think you do yourself a dis-service by not considering the 223. Ok, it isn't the ideal cartridge, but, this is America, not the Ukraine, ah the Ukraine, where some of the most beautiful women in the world wait to get out of that God forsaken country... Oops, The 223... Accurate, delivers a strong punch, though not up to 270 or 30 cal standards, but I wouldn't want to get hit with one. This is a cartridge that is excellent for short range work, by virtue of it's modest recoil, and yet able to carry the fight out to, well, a long range. This is a cartridge that is master of none, but quite good at all. Perhaps one of it's biggest virtues it availability. The number people who own this rifle is staggering. That means in any "bug out" situation, this is the ammo you are most likely to find. In addition, parts for a 223 rifle are also going to be the easiest to find. It is reported you can even make a firing pin out of a nail! While the x39 may be a very good cartridge; You have to leave quick! You are able to take very little of the stock pile of x39 you have stored. You run into a bunch who would be good to team up with, what cartridge do you believe they will be carrying? The most likely answer is, 223. You can hunt with it, you can fight with it, and you can find it! Just look at the sport of 3gun, what gun is most used? What cartridge is used most? Why? That says a lot. Tar Edited July 3, 2012 by Sleepswithdogs
