daddyseal
Primers are hard to find now, and many are out of stock...so can I use Small Pistol magnum primers instead of small pistol primers?
sfchorn
As a general rule, yes. Should not be a problem at all. Like any other component change, back your load off a tenth or two, look for pressure signs, and chrono.
Hi-Power Jack
As a general rule, yes. Should not be a problem at all. I do it all the time in my 9mm.

pjb45
I do it for any caliber I am loading-9mm or 40S&W with no problem. I also use a McLearn extended firing pin.
Kyreb
This practice kept me in competitive shooting and got me through the Clinton years. I was really thrilled when I found a couple cases of those primers as there were absolutely no primers to be had anywhere for months on end. I still have a few thousand Federal SP magnum primers left from that time. As I recall, I backed off my 40 S&W loads by 5% and worked up slowly to major PF. Robert King
I ran magnums and it only increased fps about 30, so did not even change power factor more than 1.
GrumpyOne
Been using them for years in all my loads. You do want to research the hardness of the cup though. Some magnum primers are harder than others, and may not seal properly in a light load. There are many threads on the subject here on the forum, search and ye shall find. I would stay away from CCI magnum pistol primers in light, non major loadings. They seem to cause more issues than all the others.
Coleman
Thanks for the info, I was wondering the same thing.
Dacsoft
Great to hear. I accidentally bought a box at a local gun show thinking they were regular. At least now I know they can be used.
