STI Edge Recoil Spring

Hi guys, I just bought a gently used STI Edge that has obviously been tuned to be a very racy race gun. This is my first 19/2011 and I wasn't able to garner any history from the guy I bought it from other than that he'd replaced the barrel after fouling up the original by shooting lead reloads and that the rear sight had been replaced at the same time. I have so far learned that both the slide lock and grip safety have been rendered inoperable, that the trigger is less than 2lbs and that it has a very light recoil spring installed. As I won't be loading my own ammo anytime in the near future and will probably end up buying Atlanta Arms .40L match (170 PF), I was wondering if there is any way to tell exactly what spring is installed on my guide rod. I would like to purchase a couple different springs just to see how the gun performs (the easiest tuning I can do with my limited experience) and would also like to ensure that I have a reliable setup for competition.

The spring that's in there is very light. There is a buffer installed and I haven't yet been able to ascertain whether or not the rod is tungsten or not (it is not a Recoil Master). I don't want to order a duplicate (it's not the cost, just don't want to confuse myself with unknown redundancy), and I also don't want to potentially damage my frame and slide by shooting the wrong combination. This gun is an unconfirmed Dawson Super Tuned Edge. The mags are confirmed Tuned with Grams followers, 140mm tubes and Dawson SNL +1 bases.

I realize that it's going to take months for me to learn the intricacies of this particular firearm and how to properly set it up for my particular likes and dislikes, but for now I just want to make sure it's safe and reliable for use in my first match with it in a few weeks. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I would try a 11 or 12.5 pound spring from ISMI. See which one you prefer and use it. What worked for the previous owner may not work for you. I have shot down to a 10 pound spring but like the 11 better. You are not going to damage the pistol by trying different spring weights. Have fun with your new pistol.

Agreed with Tyshoots;

Start out with a 12.5lbs recoil spring and work your way down. I settled down with a 10lbs recoil spring from Wolf Springs. But I use a Dawson precision aluma buff in conjunction with the 10lbs recoil spring to save my frame.

The slide lock was done because with the tune mags even with 1 or 2 rounds in the mag the standard slide lock would lock open. The grip on the other hand is preference, I had mine pin so the gun will go off even when I dont have a death grip on the gun.

You can tell if its tungsten guide rod by just how heavy it is... usually good for new shooters will help with recoil and muzzle flip.

just replace recoil spring first ... Dont know how many miles that spring has seen... Its only $7 to $8 bucks worth for some peace of mind. Just buy a bunch of springs at once and save yourself shipping cost down the road.
