We have a more limited selection up here in Alaska but I use Federal reduced recoil for 50 yards and in and Breneke reduced recoil slugs for 100 yards. The Brenekes are a lot more accurate in my gun and when they are zeroed for 100 yards my federals hit close to point of aim at 50 yards. (about 3 inches low and 2 inches right) The shot pattern is centered at 10 yards. The only reason I don't use the Breneke's all the time is cost they are twice what the Federals cost up here.

Is everyone just buying their slugs local to them? Or is there an online ammo source that sells buck and slugs in cases that will be cheaper?

Almost always, buying online is cheaper, if you buy some volume. If you get 10, a local source is better. Last time I bought online, I got 250.

Ammo to Go, SGAmmo, Palmetto State Armory all have good prices, depending on what you want.

Anyone tried frangible slugs? I have a case of them but haven't given them a whirl yet. I think they are 5/8ths oz moving at 1800fps.

Might want to check to see if they are magnetic. The Remington ones are. I think there might be a debate as to if they are allowed at some matches for that reason.

Yes. Whether they are magnetic or not is not important. I am not sure they are magnetic. They are not a risk for fire. They are made for close up, indoor and all kinds of practice on steel targets. They are "green", turn to dust on impact and were shot at SMM3G. The commercially available ones are 1600fps. What you have is LE issue. They shoot like a rifle shot. Excellent slugs.

This post is to reverse a previous postion on slugs. While Wolf Slugs shoot poa in my FN, after I shot enough of them I learned the rest of the story.

1. Had two not go bang.

2. Had one jam the gun up to the point it had to be repeatedly slammed into the ground to exject it. (major match only caused 180 seconds in penalty).

So there you have it I don't use wolf, I don't recommend them.

Jadeslade, might check the rules @ SMM3G. Magnetic was banned!

JJ has not yet decided for RM3G.

If you try to use ANYTHING (projectile) that sticks to a magnet you will get you an escort to the main gate at RM3G...Has been decided long before now, for the last 5 years at least. After 2 incidents (that I know of) last year, this year we will not be kind about it. If it sticks to a magnet, it will not be used. period. for the past 5 years at least, a clause addressing it was on the waiver every shooter signs at registration, so no excuses. All ammo will be checked. rifle, shotgun, and pistol ammo.

Do not bring ammo of any kind that sticks to a magnet to RM3G...for practice on the sight-in range, pinking in the pistol berms, or for competition. Steel projectile ammo is a no-no at the Whittington Center.

Steel is certainly magnetic, but you have no idea what is in these slugs. It is probably nickle, which is magnetic, but is neither a fire hazard nor a target hazard. When we spoke about it last, you said you would think about it. I'll test it to prove it is no hazard if you will again consider it. It is afterall "green" ammo which is supposed to be good for Zs. :roflol:

I'm afraid it doesn't matter! I don't want to argue or get a metallurgist or cut apart rounds. If it sticks to a magnet, you can't use it! I realize it might be nickel or iron, cobalt, gadolinium, neodymium, samarium or their alloys(steel), but for our purposes, if it sticks to a magnet, it's a no go!

If your rounds are made out of gold or silver, which may slightly repel a magnet, you would be good to go! :roflol:

We're just using a simple test that you can use to pretest your ammo before you arrive! No chemist notes, or engineer notes accepted. I'm going to be black and white on this one. Magnetic bad, no matter what the reason!

While I understand what you said Denise, don't forget to re-write RM3G rules to ban magnetic ammo, because they don't, and have not said "Magnetic" in any recent timeframe. Sorry JJ, but you are wrong. The rules say:

4. e. Tracer, armor piercing or steel jacketed (even partially) ammunition is not

allowed.

Granted you use magnets to test, but it has always said steel in the RM3G rules. There were at least 4 people who used Disintegrator ammo last year. There is no steel in the Disintegrators. They are easier on targets, safer and have no spark potential. You can certainly ban a round that was made to be safer, but don't try to claim it has always been that way without at least checking the rules you wrote.

So, if not the magnet test, then what?

How do I know that the box that your ammo comes in is what your ammo truly is?

The 9mm Disintegrator is almost $50 for a box of 50.

Maybe it's green and safe and magical...maybe it's steel core in an expensive box. No way of knowing!

We're not pulling bullets etc.

If it sticks to a magnet, leave it at home and use it at your own range.

By the way, iron dust is arguably part of steel. Iron powder is an ingredient for the alloy steel, so...if it sticks to the magnets, it has some part of steel in it...so...

I understand that people can probably come up with lots of different ammo that "doesn't hurt steel."

Sadly, if it sticks to a magnet, you are not allowed to use it at Rocky Mountain.

You've heard shooters swear they fire their ammo at point blank range at their own steel targets and it does no damage! Do you believe all of them? Who do I believe? I choose to believe the magnet!

Thanks for your efforts to save my steel!

For all of you guys and gals running the Fiocchi 1 oz reduced recoil stuff...

Have you had any issues with the ammo not fitting in your shell caddy? I'm sure that I could solve this issue with any of the load-2 caddy options, but right now I am sticking with my AP 4x4's because its what I have had the most time to get comfortable with. It seems that the rounds are a touch too long for them? Solutions/suggestions welcome.

I think the caddies are adjustable.
