JoWaCa
I'm looking into a 1-4 variable optic to mount to my new AR15. My budget will be $600-700 max with mount. I plan to use for coyote hunting, plinking 50 - 600m and I'm going to enter my first multi gun match this year. I've read about the Burris MTAC, Leupold VX-R, Burris XTR and Vortex Viper PST. I'm leaning towards the PST based on the reticle. I like having the hash marks on both of the cross hairs to figure lead on a moving target. My question is, am I missing something? Is there another optic that is recommended within my budget and determined use? Thanks, JC

Vortex 1-4 HS with Larue mount would put you in the same range $600 The MTAC has better illumination but you prefer the PST reticle. So the Vortex maybe your best bet. get the HS model instead of the PST it will save you a bit of money and you will not accidently bump your zero with the exposed target turrets. Jadeslade
Spend a little more and get a Trijicon TR24R. So much here on the forum already. I would rather shoot irons than crummy glass anytime. If the iron sights are good.

If the iron sights are good. I have the TR24G and I have owned the R both are great scopes. However the Vortex and MTAC are not bad scopes either and they have some advantages on the TR24 for longer range shooting. The TR24 is a great scope for 0 to 300 but past that you need to dial in a different zero. With the MTAC and Vortex you have hold over marks for long range shooting. I have looked at all those scopes. Vortex ok glass, reticle too busy. Dim illumination. You don't need to dial in a different zero. The triangle is 4moa-just make it dimmer and hold offs become very fast. You can dial in a different zero and I have done that for shooting out of a house so I don't go high, but it's not because of distance. MTAC glass is not great. This is for 3 gun, right? If I'm Bob Lee Swagger and have all day to make a shot, none of these scopes cut the mustard. The superior glass in Trijicon scopes is what sets them apart-crystal clear. That a being able to make that dot red hot when I want it that way. No batteries.

Onagoth
I recently decided on the XTR in favour of their reticle. Its at the upper end of your budget, but you might find a used one out there. Wasn't a fan of the MTAC reticle.
co-exprs
Mtac, XTR, PST are the best options in your budget.

I've read about the TR24's and while they get great reviews, I don't understand how you could quickly acquire and shoot a target at 300+ without the holdover marks. I don't have any experience with the Trijicon scopes, but it seems to me that without the holdover marks, i'm basically buying an optic similar to an Aimpoint or irons with magnification. I would love to pick up a TR24 b/c I hate having to rely on batteries, but I don't know how useful it will be for my longer shots.
Alaskapopo
Past 300 its a pain at least according to my friends who used it in last years Texas Multigun match. You need to dial in for a longer range zero so your target is not covered up by the post. pat

JoWaCa
So after days (weeks) of going back and forth I'm still trying to decide on an optic, but I am making progress. I've narrowed my choices down to the Vortex Viper PST (HS) 1-4 w/ Larue mount or the TA11h-g ACOG in a Larue mount Is the ACOG worth the extra $500? Yes the agog is worth the $500 bucks when you look at the fact that it will last you a lifetime. Have used one now for 10 years. getting older now and it would be nice to keep the same field of view with giving it 1 more power. just my 2 cents .. TreyK
I recently decided on the XTR in favour of their reticle. Its at the upper end of your budget, but you might find a used one out there. Wasn't a fan of the MTAC reticle. Ditto on the XTR. The BDC is nice to have for sure. Now the mount. A Burris PEPR is $80 and a LaRue QD mount is over $200. I know the LaRue is worth the added bucks but do I really need it. I want to get Dueck Defense RTS (cool factor) so a QD mount is not a real need and the difference in mount price will buy half the DD RTS (which I have decided I need/want). Sorry for the thread creep. Edited March 9, 2012 by TreyK

Daylight illumination in sun is said to be good. A little more than the OP's budget, but the group buy deal is still available for the SWFA 1-4x T-reticle for $800, includes awesome Bobro mount, cat tail and Butler Creek covers: http://www.opticstalk.com/extensive-swfass-group-buy-incredible-savings_topic28845.html Here's a recent thread on the SWFA. Reticle works great for close range hosing and longer distances. It made me learn the mil-system. I'll be seriously tempted to get the 1-6X when it arrives. http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=144855&st=
