Sin-ster
I picked up a small lot of commercially reconditioned brass the other day, and noticed almost right away that several of the cases had an oddity that I'd never encountered in the past. Right at the top of the web, a perfectly straight line wraps horizontally around the case-- anywhere from 10 to 50% in some instances. At first I thought they were actually gouges taken out of the brass, but running a fingernail over them, they actually seem to be raised ridges. Needless to say, they're hairline formations in either event. Is this a product of the roll sizing-- and what are the effects on the brass itself? Are they all unsafe to fire? Will it reduce the overall life of the brass? No issue?
Sarge
Sounds like they were expanded a little much then sized(probably without lube)with a tight die. I get it on the occasional piece of brass I size with my udie.. The press will be stiffer than usual when this happens as well.

(IIRC, you and I both cycle our brass until they quit-- and you in Major, no less.) Some are a lot more notably creased than others; maybe scrap the worst ones, keep the barely effected ones? superdude
do they look like the ones in figure 4 on this page? http://38super.net/Pages/Brass.html if so, it might be best to chuck them.

Yep, that's it-- although they are not nearly as fat or irregular as in that picture, and most of them are remarkably thin/small. Chuck 'em then, I suppose? Thanks for that document, BTW-- a good read!

Sin-ster
Throw them out!!!! Done! Well, "throw them in the scrap bucket" anyway.
shooter57
I always use pliers to crimp the cases before throwing in a scrap bucket, so someone won't try to use them and have problems. Edited March 5, 2012 by shooter57
