Postal Bob
I'm trying to find a major PF load of about 169-170 using Bullseye powder and 200gr lswc. There is such variation in the load books. What are some of the loads everyone is using that they have actually chrono'd? I'm shooting out of a standard 5" 1911. I've started with 4gr, but I believe that is too low. Edited February 26, 2012 by Postal Bob
ParaGunner
Do you have a chronograph?
Postal Bob
No, that's why I'm asking if anyone has loads they actually ran through a chrono.
Doc Hunter
I get 730fps with 4.0 Bullseye CCI small primer and a 200 LSWC @1.25 in mixed brass out of a 5 inch 1911.
mbopp
170PF for a 200gr bullet is 850FPS. You'll probably need 4.8 to 5.0gr of Bullseye to make that, but without a chrono it's anybody's guess what your velocity will be. And I've found my accuracy drops off using over 4.6gr of BE with that bullet.
Postal Bob
Still have no idea what I should be loading for major.
BMartens
I loaded BE for a while and could make major with 4.4 to 4.6 at 1.242 OAL. Need to work up to that with a chrono. There are better choices out there and I switched to 4.3 Clays at same OAL and never looked back.
Inkman
Hmmmm...just saw this. BE 5.0gr under a 200g LSWC OAL 1.252 & .470 crimp should net you 170PF, give or take a point or 2. Either way, that is a perfectly safe load to try out at those precise numbers in a 5" 1911. Load some up and go chrono them. Al
Trini
Ask at your club to see if you can borrow/use someone's chrono/
Postal Bob
Finally got a chance to chrono some of my loads. Looks like 4gr Bullseye gave me 730fps and 4.5gr gave me 790fps. So I definitely have to go to 4.8-5gr for major.
GoinHot
A lot depends on where you live as far as elevation and various weather factors. The barrel in the gun also plays a part so it is best to start with a low charge and work your way up. Without a chrono it is really hit or miss. I live at 5500 elevation and just chrono'd 4.3 gr of bullseye through a brand new Briley barrel and was at a PF of 169 consistantly. My OAL is 1.255 If you a traveling to matches around the country try to get in touch with someone that lives there or has shot there in the past to help you with the load you need to make major in that location. Fuelie777
At Area Six this year, in April, Temperature in the low 80's, 4.8 grains of bullseye, OAL of 1.250 with a 200 grain SWC gave my 179 power factor. 895 FPS velocity.
