650 Multiple Issues

Recommended Posts

OK,

I sold my very reliable LNL and bought a 650. It has been nothing but a pain in my a**. Tonite A 40 case got jammed in the shell plate and broke the crappy plastic shell plate advance part. I took the shellplate off and cant figure out how the hell to put it back together and can't find the spring that is supposed to mounted to it either. I also can't find instructions anywhere on how to change/replace it. Is this a common thing to break? For all the good press these things get on here, I am amazed by the amount of plastic on this press, as everything but a guide pulley for the primer feed was metal on my LNL. Aside from the case feeder, I am not sure I am sold on this press. Dillon took care of the warranty parts this morning, but I will still have to see what happens when I have it up an running. I know there are growing pains as with anything new, but my experience with the LNL VS the 650 favor the red guys. I like the tool heads for the 650 and the case feeder is the best out there period, I am just undecided as to the mechanics of the press itself. I know the 650 is the best selling progressive out there, so maybe it is just me in a moment of ire that dislikes it so much. I will post in the classifieds if I decide to sell

I bet there are plenty of folks on here will buy you a nice LNL & trade you for the 650.

Did you get the setup video with your press? Those videos are very helpful, if you watch them.

Good luck, hope you get things worked out but if not, like the other poster said, you can sell it here in mere minutes.

If it was very reliable and worked for you, why did you sell it? Yes, I know the way people talk about the Dillon presses on here make you think you are missing out on something magical. Fact of the matter is that both presses are great when you have them set up correctly. I have a LNL but have had some time on a Dillon 650. I have found them pretty equal in most aspects. I'm sure when you get your 650 up and running you will be happy with it. I love my LNL and have no reason to sell it.

The only press I would say is on a different playing field is the 1050. My cousin has one, that thing is a beast. If I was only going to pump out one caliber I would think about that one. I make 9, 40, 45 and the LNL does the trick for me. Good luck with the 650.

Didn't you feel any more resistance than normal pushing the handle forward?

I did not which leads me to believe it was already cracked previously

I'm far from the most experienced Dillon loader around here, but I've pumped out a few thousand rounds in .40 and 9mm. I was a complete progressive noob when I got back from a long TDY (with a very nice travel voucher) and walked into the gun shop with a shopping list. Walked out with a full 650 setup in 3 calibers.

I read the book, set it up, and haven't had a single problem that I can't blame on myself yet.

No offense, but if your press broke, it's either a warranty issue or you're doing it wrong.

I am sure it was my fault, I just didn't sense more resistance than normal when it broke, and for all I know, the problem was underlying when I got the press from my buddy. I have loaded over 100K rounds on the LNL with only one part failure (primer guide arm) and this press just seems drastically different and more "fragile" to me for some reason

Sorry to hear you are having problems with your Xl650. It is stange that I was thinking the same thing about my LNL. I could never get my LNL to index to the next station fully. I hated the indent balls on the LNL they never held the shellplate in the next station and I kept on crushing cases. I totally gave up on the LNL and I got a XL650. I could not be more happier. I guess it is a personal preference.

Is the press new or used?

Did you read the instructions?

Did you start one case at a time, with out the case feeder to get a idea of how the press works?

Having owned a LnL and a 650 I can't imagine going back to a LnL. BUT, the 650 is very different. LnL seems simple in comparison. 650 has some plastic parts. But they are low pressure parts and not prone to breaking (anything can break). Get the spare parts kit and your not going to worry about anything breaking anyway. It's imperative that you read the instructions. Download them online if you don't have them. Start with the casefeeder tube removed. Only run one case through the press at a time till you have a feel for it. Then put the casefeeder tube on and start running it normally. Setup issues will totally ruin your experience of a reloading press.
